The golden shatter of puff pastry and nutty bite of toasted sesame, woven into soft, pillowy dough. The molten heart of a cinnamon roll. Puddles of dulce de leche oozing from a sugar-dusted doughnut, and the juicy burst of blueberries bleeding into tender muffin crumb. Have we got your attention? Quality baked goods are a serious matter, so we kept our standards high in our search for Joburg’s best bakeries.

De Baba Eatery
De Baba in Melville has roared into virality recently, and we understand why. Each unique and delectable creation, whether sweet or savoury, is an immaculately executed labour of love.
Every element is made from scratch, from the buttery frangipane—delicately esconced within layers of rum-infused croissants—to the hazelnut praline crème, clemengold custard, and pistachio glaze.
Not Bread Alone
This cosy little spot in Cresta has a fan base willing to defend it to the death, and with good reason: shortbread tartlets layered with candied pecans and caramel, churros kissed with cinnamon sugar, and double chocolate brownies form part of the daily spread.
The pies are also some of the best we’ve ever tasted. They’ll arrive from the oven straight into your hands, brimming with slow-braised fillings of tender meat and veg.

The Test Bakery
If you need a reason to visit Milpark, this is it. The sleek, minimalist interior of this bakery hints at the careful, precise craftsmanship behind every loaf, pastry, and sweet treat on offer.
Spiced cardamom buns, crème brûlée doughnuts, and burnt honey tiramisu whisper your name from behind the glass counter, and frankly, it’d be rude not to respond.
Fresh Earth Food Store
Fresh Earth has long been drawing crowds to Blairgowrie with veggie-forward harvest tables, extensive gluten-free offerings, and organic produce. Their bakery, however, may just be Joburg’s best-kept secret.
Sourdough doughnuts are baked from scratch daily, each pillowy mouthful spilling with the silky-smooth filling of your choice. Crusty loaves of sweet potato bread line the shelves, dutifully watching over trays of muffins turning gold in the oven.

Pantry
Joburg’s fanciest petrol station needs no further introduction. It’s a good thing they’re open 24 hours; with a seemingly endless array of patisserie on offer, you might take that long to choose.
Our personal favourite? A massive loaf of perfectly crisp rosemary focaccia, light glinting off the flakes of salt that adorn its glossy exterior.
Bakehouse
This European-style bakery is slowly making its way from Pretoria into Joburg, and we couldn’t be happier. Every treat that reaches your lips is a sensory marvel: honey-glazed pastries, gooey brownies, silky custard tarts, doughnuts that leave salted caramel dribbling down your chin…you get the picture.
If Bakehouse were a person, we’d be asking for an autograph.

Working your way through some of Joburg’s best bakeries makes for a delicious adventure that reads like an edible love letter to your taste buds. Whether you’re after traditional classics, luxury patisserie, or just a respectable loaf of bread, you’ll find it all here.
