Fashion With A Difference

In November 2016, Woolworths released their official statement on sustainability in fashion. Promising to have at least one sustainable attribute for all their directly sourced products by 2020, Woolies set about changing the fashion game. Through a number of initiatives, they have contributed to lessening the harsh impacts of clothing manufacturing on the environment. In addition, Woolworths have advocated for ethical farming, trade and labour practice across the board. Partnering with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in 2017, Woolies Fashion converted at least 15% of their cotton to BCI. They also debuted the Style by SA collection at SA Fashion Week 2017, featuring the work of 10 local fashion designers and collectives, including Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, Selfi and AKJP. Woolworths commissioned these four fashion fundis to produce pieces made using sustainable fibres. In response, they came out with the Better Cotton Collection. A range made from cotton sourced from the SADC region, which has undergone dyeing process that uses only eco-friendly chemicals. Woolies was applauded by SAFW director Lucilla Booyzen for their continued efforts toward sustainability. She praised them for bringing this initiative to a wide consumer base and to SA fashion. While we wait in anticipation for the next Woolies sustainable fashion campaign, let's take a look at some of their top eco-friendly summer 2019 must-haves: Summer 2019 is all about bohemian ease and style. Flowing maxi dresses, gypsy shirts and sweet ruffles are all the trend. Woolworths Classic Collection offers you all these styles and more. We love this Striped Cotton Wrap Dress available online for *R699. The coral, muted grey and white vertical stripes elongate lines, while the belt cinches in the waist. Paired with cool white slides and drop earrings, this look is perfect for brunch in the city or a stroll on the beach. Woolworths Everyone needs a good pair of denim jeans for the summer season. Woolies has every possible cut you could imagine - from form fitting skinny, to straight-cut, bootleg, flared, jeggings, boyfriend jeans and crops. As an added bonus, they are all eco-friendly, made using less water and without harmful dyes and chemicals. We prefer the casual boyfriend jeans for summer as it allows for movement and breathability. Plus, they look great with t-shirts, blouses and slouchy button shirts. Classic denim blue is ideal for warm weather in our opinion, but if you want a light wash, distressed or black jeans, Woolies has it all. Gents, you haven't been forgotten. Woolies has compiled a range of seasonal must-haves, including all the basics and a few fun additions. Tropical print shirts are the 'in-thing' this season. Be daring and get yourself a Woolworths 100% cotton tropical print shirt for *R399. Patterned in a striking blue and gold leaf print, this shirt will sure get heads turning. This shirt is part of the BCI initiative too, so you can look and feel good wearing it. Worn with a comfy pair of denim shorts and espadrilles, this look is perfect for drinks with your mates, a casual date or a family braai. Woolworths
