Witnessing the Need for Change
The inception of Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary stems from a poignant moment experienced by its founders, Albert and his wife. While traversing a rural area in 2016, they bore witness to the heartbreaking abuse suffered by donkeys in South Africa. The sight of these gentle beings enduring neglect and mistreatment ignited a fervent desire within them to take action. Determined to provide a sanctuary where donkeys could find solace and respite, they embarked on a journey to create a haven for these oft-overlooked animals.
The First Three: Herbie, Eli, and Simon
In December 2017, Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary welcomed its inaugural residents: Herbie, Eli, and Simon. These three lucky equines, rescued from the SPCA Benoni, marked the beginning of a transformative endeavour. Among them, Herbie, a survivor of the infamous Hartswater Auction showcased on national television, symbolised the resilience of donkeys in the face of adversity. Since their arrival, the sanctuary has remained committed to providing a nurturing environment where each donkey can flourish.
