Brian Lara Rum Eatery

Brian Lara is often the first spot that comes to mind when it comes to Caribbean food. This refreshing gem sits in the heart of Linden and is named after the famous Trinidadian batsman. It sure knocks it out the park with its unique furnishings and vibe.  Brian Lara Rum Eatery attracts an eclectic assortment of patrons. There you'll find quirky locals, families, couples on date nights and friends meeting up for casual drinks. The menu is small but packs a punch with the best West-Indian flavours. Favourites include the jerk chicken, their giant 800g rum-barbeque basted ribs and the free welcome snack of pineapple salsa. If you’re free for the afternoon, make your way there early for the daily two for R100 special cocktails. Besides the food, expect a vibey relaxed atmosphere and some foot-tapping tunes in the background. They have the friendliest staff – including identical twin waiters who may amusingly confuse you, and the host-with-the-most manager, Lilian. The bathroom is also Instagram worthy. Open from Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 12am, and Sundays 11am to Sunday 7:30pm To book: 076 320 9739 | Find them at: 56 4th Ave, Linden, Randburg

The Jerk Company

After a tough Covid period for the food business, The Jerk Company's physical space and deliveries took a break. However, they've announced a 2022 comeback so watch this space!  In the meantime, they are available for catering events and custom orders via email. They offer a simple, no frills authentic Caribbean food experience. Here you'll find a variety of dishes cooked in traditional jerk spices in their charcoal smoker. Look forward to scrumptious Trinidadian curries, rotis, oxtail, plantain and specially marinated patties.

Cool Runnings

A quaint off-the-beaten spot. You'll spot the Caribbean influence in the rustic, outdoorsy red, green and yellow décor and chilled vibe. Cool Runnings’ drawcard is the set weekly entertainment schedule. Tuesday is Bingo Night and Thursday  Quiz Nights. Friday is party time! On Sundays guests can wind down and be serenaded by live jams. The restaurant also offers a family-friendly space with a small play area for kids. In terms of food, try the chilli prawn starters and T-Bone steak … and take advantage of the half price pizza on Mondays. To book:  010 593 4456 | Find them at: 49 High Road, Benoni

The Royale

If you’re looking for a laid-back but stylish social vibe, this fun and decorative Caribbean-themed restaurant is a great choice! The Royale gives a vibrant ambiance, with a narrow sidewalk feel and décor that will make you forget you’re in the middle of Craighall on Jan Smuts street and not vacationing in South America. It’s a great place for after work drinks and Caribbean food with a delicious cocktail and food menu. The assorted sliders are a great choice if you’re feeling peckish and can’t decide on one flavour. The cauliflower wings are a hit (vegetarian or not) as is the main of pork belly. If you’re in the mood for a little boogie the quirky dancefloor hidden at the back of the restaurant opens up on weekend evenings. It gets busy towards the end of the week so make sure you book a table. To book: 0605752471 | Find them at: 357 Jan Smuts Ave, Craighall Park
