In honour of our legendary former President, Nelson Mandela, and his life and love for our country, why not spread the love, do good and give back to the community on Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July with these events in and around Joburg? There's something for everyone. 

Mandela Day Houghton Run

Join the Nelson Mandela Foundation for their 8km Mandela Day Houghton Run on Sunday, 17 July 2022. If you are a Discovery Vitality member, you'll earn 300 Vitality points while you run and jive along the route to the sounds of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Sounds like your ideal Mandela Day celebration? Then be sure to get your tickets at at R200 per person. All of the race proceeds will go towards supporting the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Nelson Mandela Day Community Fair

Date: Saturday, 16 July 2022 to Monday, 18 July 2022 from 09:00 – 17:00

Join Decathlon Bryanston as they give back to a few exceptional community organisations this Mandela Day! These organisations will have stands set up at the Bryanston Decathlon store, where you can learn about their work and initiatives and help them reach their dreams. You can donate your second hand sporting gear, old board games, school stationery, and books. You will also be able to buy items on each organisation's wish list and donate these at the store. This will be Decathlon's first Nelson Mandela Day Community Fair over the Mandela Day weekend, in honour of the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to the protection of human rights and social justice. Ladysmith Black Mambazo Celebrates Nelson Mandela

In celebration of our legendary former President, Nelson Mandela, five time Grammy winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, will be performing to celebrate the life and times of a world-renowned political icon and leader with a live concert featuring their classic hits and new music. Sibongiseni Shabalala, son of the late Joseph Shabalala who founded the group in 1964, says, "The late President Nelson Mandela was a big supporter of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He said that when he was on Robben Island, Ladysmith Black Mambazo was consoling them and giving them hope that one day South Africa will be free." Paint Madiba with Paint Nite at Eastgate

Join Paint Nite and Eastgate for a unique event to celebrate Mandela Day by painting Tata Madiba’s iconic face. In a Pop Art theme, Paint Nite's amazing artist will take participating shoppers step-by-step through the painting that you’ll want to hang on your wall. They will also be doing a collection drive at this event. Take along as many unused or secondhand warm items – such as blankets, shoes and clothes – that will be donated to those less privileged. So, have some fun and make a difference all at one exciting event! This initiative will be taking place at Primi Piatti in Eastgate between 14:00 – 17:00. The Cotlands Laugh For 67-Minutes Comedy Show

For the third year running, Cotlands will once again be hosting their flagship comedy event, Laugh for 67-Minutes, in spirit of Mandela Day. With this event, you can help change a child’s life, in support of children that don’t have access to any early learning opportunities. This year, the comedy show is bringing a bigger entertainment line-up! Partnered with Hard Rock Cafe to host not one, but TWO comedy shows... one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town! Ladles of Love at Nelson Mandela Square

This Mandela Day, Ladles of Love are aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the largest food can mosaic in the shape of the South African flag. This exciting attempt will be taking place at the iconic and well-known Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. And if you're looking to be part of this and would like to help break the Guinness World Record, you can either buy food cans to go into the record-breaking mosaic, at R20 per food can, or buy a ticket to volunteer 67 minutes of your time, at R150 per slot. The Health Food Emporium's Food Packing For The Less Fortunate

One hand can feed another. If you don't have anything planned for your 67-minutes yet, why not head to the Health Food Emporium at Northlands Deco Park in Randburg? Here, you can spend 67 minutes of your time helping them pack nutritious care packages consisting of ingredients in their pantry. All you need to do is bring your hands, and a smile. All care packages will go to those in need. Children are also welcome to join in on this act of kindness. This event is in partnership with Nutriseed: NuSeed/NuMe.

Mandela Day Pizzas at Panarottis Morning Glen Mall

Date: Monday, 18 July 2022 from 12:00 until 21:00

Craving some pizza? then why not do your good deed while delighting your taste buds to a cheesy pizza at Panarottis Morning Glen Mall. As the saying goes: the way to most people’s hearts is through their tummies, which is why the Sandton SPCA and Panarottis Morning Glen Mall have organised a fundraiser that will keep you satisfied. Join them for a delicious meal in aid of the animals that they serve, support, and protect! All you need to do is show up at the designated Panarottis, say the phrase that saves: "feed me for the animals" or just "I’m here for the SPCA", and enjoy a meal with your loved ones – a portion of your bill will go to the Sandton SPCA.
