Joburg Gems: The Joburg Theatre

Sofia Kouridis / March 9, 2026

by Beverley Wilcock

Imagine the velvet curtains rising, the stage lights glowing, and the first notes of an unforgettable performance filling the air. This is the Joburg Theatre Complex experience, the cultural heartbeat of Johannesburg, with a rich history dating back to 1962. This world-class venue has evolved into a hub of creativity, hosting Broadway musicals, operas, ballets, and a beloved annual pantomime that's become a festive tradition.

As one of the most technically advanced theatres in the southern hemisphere, it offers a dynamic lineup of productions ranging from global hits like West Side Story and The Color Purple to groundbreaking South African works. With the elegant Stages Restaurant for pre-show dining and a seamless ticketing experience, the theatre is not just a venue, but a journey into the world of imagination and storytelling.

Tell Me More, Tell Me More (About the Joburg Theatre Complex)

The Joburg Theatre, formerly the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, is a premier cultural landmark in the city. The theatre hosts world-class productions, including international hits and innovative South African works. Upgraded in the 2000s, the Joburg Theatre complex now boasts four theatres: The Mandela Theatre, Lesedi Theatre (previously Fringe Theatre), People’s Theatre and Space.com. The biggest, the Mandela Theatre, can seat 1069 people and is the most technically advanced theatre in the southern hemisphere. Programmable lifts and flying systems have been installed for peak performances (you know: “Jack, I’m flying! I’m flying!” type of things).

There’s Something For Everyone

'But what’s the big deal?', you may be wondering. Why visit 'just another theatre'? If the backstory of this theatre, allure of comfy seats, lights, camera and action, haven’t been enough to whet your appetite, then how about the widest range of productions imaginable? There are musicals, ballets, South African originals, and so much more.

An Ode to Motown opened on 20 February in celebration of Black History Month, and for all the Shrek fans, Shrek The Musical Jr returns to the People’s Theatre from 10 March. The swamp is calling! For all dance enthusiasts, The Bacchae: An African Choral Ballet will be at the Joburg Theatre in early July. But if you can’t wait that long, Dance Spectrum – The Origi-Nation will be on in all its glory from 19 to 21 March. This year’s production includes neo-classical ballet, contemporary, Spanish, and African dance styles.

Did Someone Say Pantomime?

Pantomime is synonymous with Joburg Theatre and is usually on around Christmas time. This year is the 39th interactive production that mixes fairytale(s) with current affairs. It transports audiences, young and old, into a world of fun where all is good and jolly. Belly laughs, naughty jokes and sing-alongs abound, and this year, from 31 October till 23 December, you can catch Alice in Wonderland at the Mandela Theatre.

For more information on the pantomime or any of the other productions at Joburg Theatre, or to book tickets, visit their website. You can also subscribe to the newsletter and get all the latest news right in your inbox.

Dinner Before The Show

No one wants to sit in the theatre with a tummy grumbling louder than the actual show, right? Now there’s no need. The newly renovated STAGES restaurant reopened in January, and to say the revamp is jaw-dropping would be an understatement. Some of the decor is made of recycled materials (thumbs up for recycling and eco-friendliness), and the bronze-gold lighting is particularly showstopping. If that’s not enough, the menu now also serves quick and easy on-the-go crowd pleasers like burgers and ribs. Just remember that the restaurant does not accept cash, so bring your debit and/or credit card(s).

Theatre Truck Hire: Bringing the Show to You

This mobile stage is perfect for community events, festivals, corporate gatherings, and more, bringing the magic of live performance to any location.
