Tucked into the western folds of Johannesburg, Melville is the city’s eccentric cousin. It's laid-back, yet somehow also lively, steeped in culture yet refreshingly current. It's the kind of place where artists, students, foodies, and dreamers cross paths in buzzing cafes and leafy avenues. Ready to dive into its world of indie bookstores, eclectic eateries, buzzing nightlife, and more? Here’s your complete guide to life in Melville.

A Little History
Dating back to 1896, this suburb is not only one of the oldest in Joburg but also holds archaeological significance, thanks to the Melville Koppies.
The suburb takes its name from Edward Harker Vincent Melvill, the land surveyor who mapped the area. No one seems to know why there is an extra ‘e’ in Melville, the suburb. Back in the day, it was mostly home to Afrikaans‑speaking, lower‑middle‑class families, who lived an uncomplicated rural life. Now, it's a hub for students, artists, musicians, restaurants, cafés, and cultural diversity. In a city that constantly reinvents itself, Melville remains a grounded, character-filled retreat, yet never stagnant. It's bohemian at heart, but don't let the relaxed facade fool you; Melville hums with energy, creativity, and an unmistakable urban pulse. This suburb is one of Johannesburg’s oldest, yet it’s continuously reborn through the imaginations of its residents.
Where Joburg’s Soul Wears Vintage Boots and Sips Strong Coffee
There's no shortage of coffee shops here. You'll find De Baba Eatery, now famous for its world-class baked goods and high on our list of Joburg's best bakeries, as well as IT Corner, a Halaal coffee shop that's gone the extra mile to integrate all the perks you look for in a co-working space. Order the Marrakesh coffee, fragrant with warm Moroccan spices, and settle into a comfy spot. It might be hard to leave.

Shopping
Melville wears its vintage well, and nowhere is that more evident than in its shopping scene. You won’t find mega malls or glitzy designer chains here; Melville is all about curated boutiques, quirky secondhand shops, and unexpected treasures waiting behind unassuming doorways. It’s a collector’s dream, with antique stores offering everything from aged vinyl to retro lamps. If you're looking to upgrade your wardrobe, local fashion boutiques provide stylish, one-of-a-kind finds with that coveted Johannesburg flair. To discover more of Melville’s retail charm, take a stroll through its independent stores here.
