Joburg Admin / August 21, 2020

Johannesburg West and the West Rand is a great area to visit if you're looking to get a better glimpse into the history of our city (think during the time of the Gold Rush) and perhaps enjoy some of the best outdoor adventures and countryside escapes Joburg has to offer. Suburbs in this area include Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Weltervreden Park, Honeydew, Roodepoort and Muldersdrift, just to name a few.

Randfontein

Randfontein is a small gold mining town out in the far West Rand. Being far from the city, this area is home to a collection of farms and residential areas. Although this is one of the smaller towns, there are still a couple hot spots worth visiting if you need to do a little shopping, want to grab a bite to eat or simply just want to explore what this old mining town has to offer. For some retail therapy, the Village Square Shopping Centre and Tambotie Mall boasts stores including Foschini, Ackermans, Mr Price, Edgars and Shoprite. There isn't much to do here if you're looking for some excitement, but the neighbouring suburb of Krugersdorp, merely a few minutes drive away, does offer a variety of activities for a fun day out with family and friends. Krugersdorp

Known as the industrial hub, Krugersdorp is another mining town in the far West Rand. With a history that dates back to the Gold Rush, the area has interesting and unique old buildings and churches that are worth visiting and exploring. Krugersdorp offers more on the business and entertainment front. Here, you'll find a bustling business centre, shopping malls and outdoor adventure activities just short drive away. One of the big attractions to the area include the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, offering a variety of outdoor activities such as self game drives, free 4x4 routes, a reptile park, lion feedings and more. For some water park fun during the hotter month, Pine Resort is a must visit. And as for shopping centres in the area, visit Key West Shopping Centre complete with a cinema and indoor sports arena, or Valleyview Shopping Centre. west rand

Weltervredenpark

Situated between Beyers Naudé Drive and Hendrik Potgieter Street, Weltervredenpark is a small residential area that offers all the necessities of convenient living. There are a handful of schools nearby, plenty of property if you're looking to call this place home, as well as a few shopping destinations. For all your shopping needs, visit the Hillfox Value Centre on Hendrik Potgieter Drive and enjoy some retail therapy at over 30 shops. Or head to Palm Court Shopping Centre offering a convenient stop to get all your dinner ingredients or do your weekly grocery shopping, and enjoy a few rounds of Adventure Golf with family and friends. Nearby suburbs including Randburg, Honeydew and Northcliff offer a variety of entertainment over the weekends. Honeydew

Out in the countryside of the west lies the little suburb of Honeydew. This is the ideal area to call home and commute from thanks to its close proximity to the N1, which will take you practically anywhere everywhere within and around the city. Honeydew Village Shopping Centre offers residents and visitors in the area a one-stop retail experience, offering everything  from a Woolworths for your groceries, a Pizza Hut perfect for some cheesy takeaway, and Stylistix for that quick trim to the firm favourite La Rosa Mexican Grille & Tequilera, Purple Heart Gallery and Sorbet for a quick pamper. As for entertainment, a mist-visit in the area is Honeydew Mazes. Here, families and group can enjoy exploring and getting lost in their maize mazes. It's a unique adventure out in the great outdoors. [caption id="attachment_96558" align="aligncenter" width="663"]Honeydew Mazes Johannesburg Image from Honeydew Mazes.[/caption]

Roodepoort

Essentially a city all on its own, the lively suburban neighbourhood of Roodepoort is one of the oldest areas in the city, dating back to the Gold Rush in 1884. Offering the perfect blend of residential and formerly-industrial characteristic, this is the ideal place to call home and work. And not only that, it has a lovely selection of retail hubs, restaurants and entertainment options for residents and visitors to enjoy. To name a few, here you'll find the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens; the Kloofendal Municipal Nature Reserve; the Wilgeheuwel Extreme Park; the Alice Art Gallery; Clearwater Mall; Indy Kart Indoor Go-Kart Racing; and 14th Avenue District Shopping Centre. If you're still on the search for the perfect country wedding venue for your special, be sure to explore the Muldersdrift Wedding Mile that boasts plenty of stunning places to say your vows. A few include Avianto, Oakfield Farm, Memoire, and Moon and Sixpence. Cool off in the summer at the Happy Island Water World, the latest addition to the Gauteng water park scene. Visitors to the area will also find the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage site home to the breathtaking Sterkfontein Caves and world-class and award-winning Maropeng Visitor Centre. Other highlights in the area include the Silverstar Casino filled with restaurants and family entertainment and the architectural masterpiece of Cradlestone Mall, offering a unique shopping experience.
