Caffeine and confectionery at Life of Pie Coffee Shop

Document

We recently discovered Life of Pie Coffee Shop in Elandsfontein. A quaint corner style café, this hidden gem is well worth visiting for a morning cuppa and something sweet. Their buttery pies are simply divine, too. So, stop by as soon as you can.

We don’t know about you, but we adore old fashioned cafés and pie shops. Life of Pie Coffee Shop offers that old school corner café vibe with all the modern touches we’re accustomed to. Located in an unassuming industrial area in Germiston, this hidden gem was a rare find. We happened upon it totally by accident, but were delighted to have found it.

The exterior is fairly modest, but once you step inside you will be amazed by the chic contemporary décor.  If you want to sit down with your coffee, you will have to take a seat outside, however. We imagine that in the summer months this would be quite enjoyable, but it was a little too blustery for our liking. The full-bodied espresso based coffees we ordered made up for this, though. A little something sweet on the side distracted our senses completely and we were quite content to bask in the fresh air. We’ll definitely be back soon to sample more of their menu. We took a sneak peak to help us plan before our next trip. These are some of the treats and drinks we’ve got our eye on:

Coffee, chai, and cream

Life of Pie’s coffee selection is sophisticated and trendy. Their menu features all the classics, including our personal favourite – the Café Mocha. They use Tribeca coffee beans to give you the fullest and boldest tasting coffee. There was very little bitterness to the coffee which is always a win in our books. At R36 for a grande size coffee, we felt like we had scored the jackpot.

We were delighted to find an almond milk alternative on the menu too. Smaller coffee shops such as this rarely offer milk alternatives, so we were quite impressed. If you aren’t sensitive to lactose or just prefer dairy to plant-based alternatives, try adding a dollop of cream to your coffee order. For only R7 extra, it’s a divine treat, especially on a chilly winter’s morning.

Life of Pie also caters to tea lovers, iced coffee fanatics and chocoholics. We’ll be visiting Life of Pie on our next cheat day to try out their Bar-One Hot Chocolate – frothy steamed milk with Bar-One chocolate powder. Paired with one of their cinnamon swirls or butter croissants, we can’t imagine a better treat.

Their sweet menu also features sugary doughnut rings, choc au pain and jumbo muffins. Start your morning off right by visiting them to get your hands on a few confectionery goodies. Spiced chai in one hand and a sticky doughnut in the other, what could be a better way to kick off your day?

A pie a day…

While the coffee shop’s biggest attraction is its drinks menu, they also offer a variety of savoury treats. As their name suggests, they are in the business of delivering buttery, flaky pies filled with delicious gravies. While we haven’t had the chance to sample them yet, the pies smelled utterly mouthwatering as we stood waiting for our coffees. Take your pick from their selection of classic flavours – roast chicken, steak and kidney, cheese and onion, beef curry, and much more. A pie a day keeps the winter blues away after all. We can’t promise you’ll meet your health goals, but we can guarantee that your taste buds will thank you.
