6 Reasons To Visit Field Berry Farm

Joburg Admin / December 1, 2025

If you’re looking for a wholesome outdoor escape just south of Joburg, The Field Berry Farm is a treasure you need to bookmark. Best known for its raspberry season from January to April, this family-friendly spot pairs fresh-air adventure with a beautifully meaningful origin story. Here’s why Joburgers return year after year.

1. You Can Pick Your Own Raspberries

Nothing beats gathering sun-warmed berries by the handful. During raspberry season, you can amble through the endless rows of raspberry bushes, filling your bucket as you go along. It’s wholesome, hands-on, and tons of fun for everyone. Plus, you'll gain a little insight and appreciation for where your fruit comes from.

2. There Are Activities for All Ages

The farm offers much more than berries. Kids can burn off energy on the children’s bicycle track or outdoor playground, and on selected days, the lawns come alive with local live music. It’s an easygoing atmosphere where parents can relax, and the little ones are entertained.

You'll also find food vendors and proper farm stalls there with amazingly-priced fresh produce. Take it from us: there's nothing more delicious than a fresh loaf of chocolate-swirled kitke bread.

3. The Shop Is A Raspberry-Flavoured Treasure

There are a ton of raspberry-based wares available for purchase, both to enjoy there and take home with you! Raspberry jams, craft beers, frozen yoghurt, baked goods, syrups...we could go on. Products typically remain available even outside of berry season, so you can get your fruity fix whenever you'd like. Try the raspberry cider. You won't regret it!

4. The Farm Has A Beautiful Story

The Field Berry Farm carries a legacy that sets it apart. Its history dates back to 1991 when Mama Lungi joined The Field Community: a group founded to defy Apartheid housing laws by living together as neighbours across racial lines.

She took it upon herself to obtain a driver's license and take a computer course, later taking over the berry project in 2006, to grow the farm into what it is today. Her passing in 2023 left a deep mark, but her heart and vision remain at the centre of it all.

5. “Big Mama’s Raspberry Farm” Brings The Story To Life For Kids

Inspired by the farm’s history, the team created a beautifully illustrated children’s book that shares the story through endearing mouse characters. It’s perfect for ages 6–9, though its warm watercolour artwork appeals to all. Visitors can also buy handmade field mice toys. A sweet memento inspired by the book!

6. There’s More Than Berries: The Almond Blossom Festival is a Must-See

In 2020, the farm planted its first almond trees. Today, more than 1000 trees create a breathtaking display every September when the blossoms open. Their inaugural Almond Blossom Festival in 2023 drew nature lovers, photographers and families for a rare Joburg blossom experience. We can't wait for the next one; it's really quite a sight to behold.
