Document

Previously known at the Wits Planetarium, The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome will be opening its doors to the public as of 01 February 2025!

What Is the The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome?

The School of Physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg is home to the NEW ground-breaking, high-tech, multidisciplinary Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, a facility for digital research and innovation. In order to transform the understanding and experience of science, art, and culture, Anglo American partnered with the University in 2022 to fund the renovation, expansion, and digitization of the Johannesburg Planetarium, which was then 62 years old.

What To Expect at The NEW Wits Anglo American Digital Dome?

With its cutting-edge immersive setting for innovative storytelling, stunning displays, and interactive educational materials, the Digital Dome offers high-resolution projectors, surround sound, and auditorium seating to create captivating experiences for audiences of all ages and interests.

A seminar room and meeting space that can be reconfigured for collaboration, seminars, and workshops for research and teaching are also features of the Digital Dome. By working together with top scientists, artists, and educators, we foster innovation and pique curiosity while offering a venue for learning, amusement, and artistic expression.

As the Digital Dome sets out on a voyage through the wonders of the cosmos and the depth of human creativity, we invite everyone to experience the future of education and entertainment.

Their Upcoming Shows

To celebrate their opening, The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome has TWO shows currently available:

Race to Earth

  • Suitable for ages 6 to12 years

The Gaslunians and the Karlunians are two competing ethnic groups that inhabit the Moon. The Queen Gasoline is obsessed with the reason why the Earth, which rules her nation’s sky, never touches the Moon. She gives Gasogene the task of creating a device that will enable her to transport a Gaslunian to Earth! Karfurax, the Emperor, promises to use every effort to ensure that the first selenite to arrive on Earth is a Karlunian. The honor of the entire Karlunian nation rests on this mission, which he gives to the scientist Karboxyle. They will be able to determine the fundamentals of space travel and the basis of universal gravitation after a heated competition.

Cosmic Collisions

  • Suitable for teenagers and adults

Cosmic Collisions, which is narrated by Robert Redford, offers viewers a remarkable look at these forces that still have an impact on our universe. Cosmic Collisions, a stark contrast to our serene night sky, depicts the amazing outcome of gravity drawing planets, stars, and galaxies together. See the violent collisions that not only produced new stars and put an end to the Age of Dinosaurs, but also produced the warmth of the Sun and ocean waves that are necessary for life on Earth. The American Museum of Natural History, New York, worked with the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum, China; the Denver Museum of Nature & Science; and GOTO Inc., Tokyo, Japan, to create Cosmic Collisions.
