The Auto & General Theatre on the Square delivers world-class productions, catering to a wide variety of audiences. From stand-up comedy, to drama, kiddies theatre and musicals, the Theatre on the Square has it all. If you've never visited this classy Sandton performance centre, then now is the time. Adorned in red velvet textures, the venue screams upmarket cabaret with a South African twist. Check out their 'Wall of Fame', which features all the talents who have graced the stage over the years. The bar is always the centre of attraction just before the start of a show. Serving up sweet wines, whisky and non-alcoholic drinks, this is the perfect place to prepare yourself for the wonder of stage magic.

The 200-seater main theatre is comfortable and spacious. Again, the red seats give the auditorium a feeling of worldliness. Of course, being right in the heart of Sandton at Nelson Mandela Square, you would expect nothing less. But, if you have ever imagined what it might be like to visit an independent theatre space in London or New York, this may be as close as you can get while still on Jozi homeland. This autumn, the Theatre on the Square will be hosting a fantastic line-up of shows. Here are our top picks for the season:

Friday Lunch Hour Music Concerts

Friday lunch hour concerts are back and better than ever at the Theatre on the Square. This autumn, they've got a stellar line-up of classical music concerts to amaze and inspire you. Join them at 13:00 every Friday for a diverse programme of performances featuring some of South Africa's most talented musicians. There will be a few non-classical surprises this season as well, so music lovers of all genres can join in. Tickets are unreserved and only go on sale one hour before the concert begins, so make sure to arrive at the theatre with good time to spare. We are most looking forward to seeing Carl Straussner perform a selection of classical guitar works this May. There is no better way to wind down from a busy week than with an hour of melodic guitar music, so make sure not to miss it.

South African comedy is quite unlike any other. Visit the Theatre on the Square this May for a good few giggles. The hilarious sequel to From Koe’siestes to Kneidlach will be taking to the stage to delight and entertain you. Written and performed by the multitalented Chantal Stanfield, this true life story will have tears running down your cheeks from the hilarity that ensues when a girl from the Cape Flats falls in love with a Jewish boy from the east of Joburg. Toss in the arrival of a "beige" baby, and there's no stopping the laughs. This is South African comedy at its very best - witty, irreverent and a little bit cheeky. Don't miss it.
