About The Ditsong Organisation

The Ditsong Organisation is an amalgamation of eight museums situated around Gauteng. The most prestigious of these museums is the Ditsong Museum of Natural History. Formerly known as the Transvaal Museum, this national heritage site was established in 1892! The museum now acts as the custodian and documentation centre of South Africa's national heritage.

Fossils Galore  

The Ditsong Museum of Natural History is the only natural history museum in Gauteng. It is also one of the largest of its kind in South Africa. The museum is home to a variety of collections and exhibits. Come and marvel at their displays of hominid fossils from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. These displays include the famous Mrs Ples, skeletons, skins and mounted specimens of amphibians, fish, invertebrates, reptiles and mammals. It's an archeologists' paradise.

What sets the Ditsong Museum of Natural History apart from others is these collections. It is one of the only museums to offer the public such a close look at original fossil material. So, make your way here as soon as you can to avoid missing out.

Educational Programmes

The museum runs a number of educational programmes for schools, students, and tourists. These programmes are based on the various exhibits and collections at the museum and are aligned with the South African school syllabus. The museum offers these programmes in various South African languages as well, making them accessible to one and all.

Part of the museum's educational programme is a sensory expedition through the Discovery Centre. Curious young minds are encouraged to use their five senses to explore the wonders of nature.
