Understanding JSE Top 40 & How to Invest In It

Joburg Admin / September 13, 2022

It is interesting to note that while there are over 400 shares listed on this exchange, the JSE top 40 index provides a reasonably accurate reflection of market performance. This is because the JSE top 40 own approximately 80% of the market value on the JSE.

JSE Top 40 Performance

Despite suffering a significant setback because of the pandemic, the performance of the JSE Top 40 index has been outstanding during the last ten years leading up to the end of 2021. It increased by 136 percent during the decade, excluding the effects of dividend payments. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (also known as the JSE) was established in the 1800s and is now the biggest stock exchange in Africa. The year 1996 saw the beginning of the shift from floor-based trading to online platforms, which opened the door for individuals to engage in distance trading.

How To Invest In The Top 40 Shares On The JSE?

Risk and potential return on investment are the two primary considerations that should guide your choice of share to purchase. However, to invest in stocks properly and financially, the minimum necessary amount of cash is 5000 South African Rand (also abbreviated as R5000). The JSE will provide stocks at a wide variety of prices. This is because traders who do not invest with a significant amount of cash will be subject to an average broker fee of ten percent, nullifying any prospective profit from trading.

The trader can gain returns from ordinary shares higher than the inflation rate if they make informed decisions. Thus, it is crucial to read annual reports of companies they are interested in investing in, keep up with market-related news, and stay informed about current events.

Find a Trader or Broker

As was noted before, for investors to purchase shares on the JSE, they will first need to pick a stockbroker. There are many different member companies from which to choose.

Establishing a Trading Account

Following the selection of a Broker, the next step is establishing a trading account. Every broker will follow their very own one-of-a-kind procedure.

First Purchase Made on the JSE

Discretionary brokers thoroughly understand how to buy shares, and their financial well-being is also at risk when they make these purchases. As a consequence, investors are often certain of making some astute acquisitions. It is advised that a trader choose between four and five distinct shares to acquire if they want to go the non-discretionary way. Doing so will provide some degree of diversity in the trader's portfolio. This is essential for protecting investors against severe declines in any given market.

The JSE is always developing new investment instruments, which allows it to stay current and technically in touch with investors while also keeping relevant.
