To broaden our horizons on the delicious trend of dim sum, we have gone in search of the top dim sum spots in the city. Here are a few of our favourites. 


Shun De Chinese Restaurant - Cyrildene

We have heard so many things about this spot that we had to try it out for ourselves, and we're obsessed! Now, the selection might be limited, but we promise you, the quality is there. It's definitely one of the most authentic Dim Sum spots in the city and is totally worth the visit when you're in Cyrildene. But if you're looking for a bit more variety, not to worry - their menu offers quite a bit, which includes old favourites and some interesting choices too. This spot is well-known for its yum cha buffet!

So Yum – Hyde Park Corner

So Yum offers a unique experience as they celebrate the unique culinary (and tasty) art of dim sum. From what I have tasted, I can safely say that this spot has the best dim sum in Joburg. Choose from their great selection of baked puff parcels, steamed buns, crispy money bags with celery, siu mai and gau (with great a variety of fillings). What I love most is the spicy duck triangle – a hot and spicy duck 'samoosa' served with a tasty bean sauce.

Yamitsuki - Bedfordview

Yamitsuki has is all! Sushi, noodle dishes, Teppanyaki, tapas, seafood and of course, dim sum. But you need to enjoy these delicious little suckers in the restaurant rather than through takeaway. They're the best when they're brought straight out of the kitchen, right to your table. Take your pick from spinach and cream cheese; chicken, coriander and cashew (we call it the Triple C); the chicken, basil and chilli; or the prawn and cream cheese steamed dumplings. We kid you not, this is some of the best dim sum we've ever tasted!

KOI Restaurant – Rosebank, Sandton, Lynnwood

I’m no dim sum expert, but I can definitely say that I think KOI Restaurant’s dim sum is right up there with the best. They have some of the most innovative options on their menu. Their fillings include chicken and prawn siu mai topped with caviar, salmon and cream cheese topped with caviar, lamb pau just to name a few of the interesting flavours. The verdict? KOI is definitely worth a visit.

Wang Thai – Nelson Mandela Square

Whenever I visit Sandton City, I cannot help but swing by Wang Thai for some amazing Asian food! And best of all, they offer the tastiest medley of dim sum. You get yummy steamed dumplings with an assortment of fillings that include prawn, shiitake mushrooms, crabsticks, and a divine combination of prawns and shiitake mushrooms. This medley is also served with a vinegary dim sum sauce.

The Big Mouth - Sandton

After a busy day shopping up a storm at Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, why not stop by The Big Mouth on the square for some lunch? They offer a great array of sushi (both traditional and unique), poke bowls, delicious seafood from the grill and much more. And of course, they offer a tasty selection of dim sum. Make sure you ask the waiter about what dim sum they have lined up for the day. There's nothing more indulgent than relaxing in their outdoor area on the square, doing a little people watching and tucking into food dim sum.

Simply Asia 

Okay, we admit, this one is obvious but we simply have to mention them because let's face it, their food is delish. Simply Asia is one of the most well-known Asian food spots in the city. Just about anyone and everyone has been to a Simply Asia branch at least once in their lifetime. They offer great spring rolls, curries and stir fry but let’s not forget the dim sum. Make your choice from either spinach dumplings, custard steam buns, duck filled buns, chicken and prawn steamed dumplings and springrolls ... yummy!
