Spring School Holiday Musts For The Kids


Can you believe the school holidays have come around yet again? We swear the last ones only happened a week ago! Anyway, it’s time to look for some springtime holiday fun to keep the little ones out of mischief. Here are a few great options.

Bright Young Chefs Holiday Club Baking Workshops

Bright Young Chefs will be hosting a spring holiday club to keep the little ones busy and entertained from 23 – 27 September 2019. The cost is *R150 per 3-hour session (plus a *R5 online booking fee), which includes a chef’s hat, use of all the equipment and ingredients needed, refreshments, aprons (for use only) and takeaway containers. They’ll have lots of fun cooking and baking delicious treats such as a chocolate log, double chocolate chip cookies, strawberry shortcake, chocolate and cream puffs and Troll cupcakes! Musical Theatre Holiday Club

If your kids have a keen interest in the arts and dream of becoming a Broadway star one day, then why not let them enjoy a Musical Theatre Holiday Club at the Johannesburg Academy for Theatre Arts? The club is focused on all school-going children of various ages (between 6 – 16 years old) and offers a programme that evolves around co-ordination, musicality, expression, voice projection, improvisation and performance. No previous experience is needed and the staff work with the children’s individual and unique abilities. The club will run from Monday, 23 September and Wednesday, 25 September to Friday, 27 September 2019 from 8:30 to 12:00. Please note: 24 September is a public holiday.

The WITS Planetarium

They might not have a school holiday programme but they do have some awesome celestial public shows coming up, that’ll delight the kids. September shows for teens and kids will be Secret of the Cardboard Rocket (Saturday, 05 October 2019 at 12:30) and Space Travel (Saturday, 28 September 2019 from 10:30 and Saturday, 05 October 2019 from 12:30), so book your spots ASAP. Also, make sure you keep an eye out for their October 2019 show lineup.

Shepherd’s Fold Stables Pony Camp

Perfect for reconnecting your kids with nature, the Shepherd’s Fold Stables’ Pony Camp offers a fun and exciting learning experience, especially for kids that have a fondness for horses. The programme will be taking place from 25 – 27 September 2019 and offers two days of riding lessons, outrides, hands-on care of horses, lots of activities, lectures and games. There’s also a one day Mini Pony Camp for little ones aged between 4 – 6! And don’t worry, no previous riding experience is needed as all riding abilities will be catered for in a supervised and controlled environment. Children aged between 6 to 16 years are welcome. Rangers Day at Lory Park Zoo

Another fun and interesting school holiday programme that will get the kids out and about is Rangers Day at Lory Park Zoo from 25 – 27 September 2019 and 01 – 04 October 2019 (08:00 – 16:00). This gives children the opportunity to be a zoo ranger for the day, and they’ll clean some enclosures, help prepare food for the resident animals and also get to interact with the zoo’s ambassador animals. The whole experience will be supervised at all times by the education officer or on-duty supervisor to ensure their safety. The cost is *R200 per day, which will include lunch, drink and chips. Also, ensure your child has extra water, sunscreen and old clothes that can get dirty, as well as extra snacks to nibble on throughout the day.

Kickin It Old School Camp

It might not be too late to book a spot for your kids at the Olympics Holiday Camp at Immaculate Equestrian Academy in Walkerville from 22 – 27 September 2019. It’s the perfect way to get them away from their gadgets, off the couch and outdoors playing and making new friends. There will be plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to keep the kids entertained.

Cooking Bootcamp with The Wooden Spoon Kitchen

This one has extremely limited spacing (12 kids, 8 spaces left!) so make sure you book today. This course is perfect for keen young cooks. It is a little intense but is also a day filled with lots of fun. Now for the details: the holiday cooking classes for children is open to young ones aged 5 – 9 and the cost is *R280 per child. Book your little one’s spot for Friday, 27 September 2019 ASAP.

Spring Holiday Care

Looking to get the kids out of the house during the school holidays? Even if it’s just for one afternoon? Let them have a blast with The Express!ons Kids Club who’ll be hosting a diverse entertainment-filled holiday care programme. From Wednesday 25 September 2019 to Friday, 04 October 2019, kids can take part in a variety of fun activities including arts and crafts, yoga and dance, drama and music, gardening, baking, cooking and more. There will also be Minute-To-Win-It challenges and the ever-popular science fair. And to blow off some steam, there’s extensive playground facilities set in a beautiful countryside. Cost is as follows: Full day – *R250 per child (07:30 – 17:30); Half day (07:30 – 13:30) – *R180 per child.
