Melville Koppies Nature Reserve
This reserve and heritage site is made up of highveld grasses, trees and flowers, which include gladiolus, orchid and proteas. It is divided into many various sections, namely North, East, South And West, but access to the Central area of the reserve is limited to organised tours and hikes. However, East is open daily for walks and West is open daily for scheduled walks.
Rietfontein Nature Reserve
The 24-hectare bushveld and rocky ridge Rietfontein Nature Reserve offers visitors interesting walking trails, picnic spots and lovely day outings. This reserve mainly features flora and bird life, but a lucky few may be privileged enough to spot some buck. It’s the ideal place if you’re looking to stretch those legs, crush those stepping goals and get a bit of fresh air.
The Modderfontein Reserve is the second largest privately owned reserve in Gauteng, aimed to preserve the local plant and wildlife of the area. Visitors will be able to enjoy the grassland and hill surroundings, abundance of animals including buck, jackals and eagles and even settle down for a picnic. But if you prefer ready-made food, they have a café on site. The reserve also offers functions, cycling, Parkruns and guided walks.
Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve
From day and night game drives to touring the Wondercave, you’ll have the opportunity to reconnect with nature at the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve in the Cradle of Humankind. Game drives are roughly two-and-a-half hours long, taking place six days a week. Three of the Big Five are residents here — the lion, white rhino and buffalo.
Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge
Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge offers a wide variety of outdoor activities for all ages, including trail runs, cycling, swimming, paddling, fly fishing and game drives. The wildlife here spans over a vast sub-Saharan landscape. You can go on guided wildlife walks or game drives of up to eight people.
Lion & Safari Park
Not too far from the city is the Lion & Safari Park in Harties. Here, you can enjoy a guided mini-tour (one-and-a-half hours), where you’ll spot powerful predators or enjoy a self-drive with your own vehicle, allowing you to take your time and admire nature at your own pace.
The Wilds Nature Reserve
Situated right within the heart of Houghton, the Wilds Nature Reserve is one of our top spots for for a lovely day out and about in nature. Here, visitors can just plenty of hiking and dog walking at the dog park. Keep an eye out for the variety of small wildlife that call this area home and be sure to stop and admire the flora and fauna along the way.
Klipsrivierberg Nature Reserve
Located 10km from Johannesburg centre, 5km from bustling Soweto and 25km from Sandton, is the Klipsrivierberg Nature Reserve, also known as the Jewel of the South. It is the largest proclaimed nature reserve in the Johannesburg Metropolitan area. Hiking is the main attraction and activity here. And if you love bird watching, you’re in for a treat! Approximately 230 bird species have been identified here.
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
For beautiful and scenic hikes, nesting Verreaux Eagles and magnificent waterfalls, be sure to visit Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia. This nature reserve is home to an abundance of wildlife, including over 240 bird species. And in case you didn’t know, this place has been voted the best place to get back to nature in Gauteng .
