Nino’s restaurant, like Joburg as a whole, has a fascinating history. The Nino’s group was founded in 1989 when Nick Kokkoris purchased a coffee shop from two Italians who both had the name Nino. The outlet was based in Braamfontein and was soon the centre of attraction to executives and students alike who enjoyed a wholesome light meal, good coffee and good conversation in a European pavement café ambience.
The European styled pavement café, which is the main feature of the Nino’s outlets, was not utilized by other coffee shops at the time despite South Africa’s wonderful weather and so the outdoor experience became synonymous with Nino’s.
