What Is It?

The 2019 Lusito Land Festival is fast approaching, and lovers of Portuguese cuisine and culture are in for a treat at Cayman Road, Alewynspoort. This popular festival promises to be a celebration of exceptional food, music and fun. There's entertainment for all ages, from Portuguese folk dancing and top local artists to mouth-watering food, all celebrated at leisure under an African sky.

The easy-to-access venue is a superb, safe and central location with loads of secure parking, clean facilities and a family friendly fun fair to keep the ‘crianças’ busy. This event is hosted by the Lusito Association, a non-profit organisation for Children with Disabilities. Over the last 37 years, it has evolved into a festival celebrated by the many cultures that make up Johannesburg and Gauteng. The Portuguese tradition has however been sustained in the wonderful traditional flavours of the fine cuisine that is an important facet of the Portuguese heritage.

There’s plenty of other thrilling entertainment in store for all ages! The family can enjoy a two-hour show featuring South Africa’s top 10 wrestlers in an international-standard wrestling ring.  The little ones can also be part of the wrestling fun by safely showing off their smackdown skills under the watchful eye of a ring master. And this year, there will be something for the animal loving guests. The Joy Dogs will be at Lusito Land, where festival goers can meet talented canines and be entertained while they show off some of their tricks.

The Lusito Land Festival goes beyond having the best musical acts or giving visitors an authentic taste of Portuguese food and culture. It is an event that aims to raise awareness about differently abled people and make these people more visible to society at large. In true spirit of the cause there will be a fun 5km walk for the disabled on Sunday, 28 April 2019 from 08:00 with an entry fee of R150 per person, that also covers your entrance into the festival.

  1. For a new venue I would suggest some directions in the local media... GPS takes me to Cayman Rock in Randburg!!!
Then the price!!!!??? You trying to keep certain people out - I understand that... but R360 for an evening where we still want to buy stuff inside - on a Teachers Salary obviously includes my family as the unwanted!!! Disappointed is not the most descriptive word!!!

  2. Disappointed. Dust everywhere. Far preferred the old venue. Will not support it again if it's at Alewynspoort again.

  3. Was disappointed with the venue last year. Bigger but not better; dust everywhere. Did not enjoy it at all.

  4. Way to expensive for entry! It cost me over R2k for entry and food for the family, and left me with a dirty car and shoes...

  5. Love the venue, loved the space, can live with the dust, traffic was just hectic - but you will be seeming me again, it's still an awesome experience!!

  6. I love the new venue. Bigger and better. Hopefully the grass has grown and there will be less dust this year

  7. Too expensive as pensioners wanting to take 3 grandkids - whatever we could spend is taken up by the entrance fee!

  8. Awesome event but the dust was always an issue, especially when it has rained... But overcome the dust and dirty shoes... Go get yourself a pair.... At the NEW unique designer gum boots stall. Really well priced and now I have my very own pair, designed just for me. No more dusty shoes. Top service!!

  9. Not safe! Avoid at all costs! A family outing turned nasty when my boys were attacked in the bathroom. Scary!!!

    1. Cathy, that is absolutely frightening to hear. We are so sorry and hope everyone is okay!

  10. The only problem was the dust and the fee make it reasonable for big family's
especially if you still want us to buy food and stuff inside

  11. So bloody awesome. LOVE IT. I would go every day if I could. Such a great vibe. Ye a bit pricey at the entrance, but what do you pay for Jo'burg day in the park, colour run and other such events? R350,00, R550,00? There is grass this year which will make it even better. See you soon LUSITOLAND!!! 🙂 🙂

  12. Venue is awesome. Lotsa grass now and less dust. As usual lusito land never fails to impress. Loved it. Divine food lotsa entertainment and a lekker day to just chill and have fun with a few capriniahs!!!

  13. Wow so impressed!!! from entrance paving and grass no dust! Friendly people, really enjoyed the morning!! Best wishes for a successful 2019 festival!!

  14. Hopefully the organizers have reviewed the security. I was a victim of an unprokes assault on the Saturday, in front of my wife brother in law and his wife. We are all in our late 40s to mid 50s and professional people. Young white punks in a gang set me up for robbery, then hit and kicked me stealing my phone and cigar case. They had been drinking. Security and SAPS let them go. Cost me RRR in A&E cost for medical treatment. No Medical care given on site. Treated like a criminal by SAPS. One of many assaults that night. Organizers never responded to my complaint. Many of my Portuguese friends and colleagues won't go for this very reason.

    1. Hi Dave something similar happened to 2 other families that I know. Can I contact you to check if it was possibly the same attackers?
