What Is It?
The 2019 Lusito Land Festival is fast approaching, and lovers of Portuguese cuisine and culture are in for a treat at Cayman Road, Alewynspoort. This popular festival promises to be a celebration of exceptional food, music and fun. There’s entertainment for all ages, from Portuguese folk dancing and top local artists to mouth-watering food, all celebrated at leisure under an African sky.
The easy-to-access venue is a superb, safe and central location with loads of secure parking, clean facilities and a family friendly fun fair to keep the ‘crianças’ busy. This event is hosted by the Lusito Association, a non-profit organisation for Children with Disabilities. Over the last 37 years, it has evolved into a festival celebrated by the many cultures that make up Johannesburg and Gauteng. The Portuguese tradition has however been sustained in the wonderful traditional flavours of the fine cuisine that is an important facet of the Portuguese heritage.
For your musical entertainment, festival goers will be enthralled with this year’s lineup of live acts, which covers a wide range of genres and artists.
Weekend one will feature:
- Mi Casa
- Mango Groove
- Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels
- Rubber DUC
- Jo Black
- Bobby van Jaarsveld
This year, there will also be an awesome ’80s rock show celebrating and paying tribute to the best alternative rock bands of the decade! The Hey Now, HEY NOW NOW band will take to the Lusito Land stage on Saturday, 20 April 2019 for a two-hour show jam-packed with ’80s alternative music, taking you on a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane.
There’s plenty of other thrilling entertainment in store for all ages! The family can enjoy a two-hour show featuring South Africa’s top 10 wrestlers in an international-standard wrestling ring. The little ones can also be part of the wrestling fun by safely showing off their smackdown skills under the watchful eye of a ring master. An autograph session plus photos with the wrestlers will be available after the show.
And of course, Lusito Land is not Lusito Land without their thrilling and exciting funfair! The fairground will be jam-packed with all sorts of exhilarating rides perfect for all ages. Make sure you get your ride tickets at the funfair ticket office before heading off to the queues.
And this year, there will be something for the animal loving guests. The Joy Dogs will be at Lusito Land, where festival goers can meet talented canines and be entertained while they show off some of their tricks.
The Lusito Land Festival goes beyond having the best musical acts or giving visitors an authentic taste of Portuguese food and culture. It is an event that aims to raise awareness about differently abled people and make these people more visible to society at large. In true spirit of the cause there will be a fun 5km walk for the disabled on Sunday, 28 April 2019 from 08:00 with an entry fee of R150 per person, that also covers your entrance into the festival.
