We simply adore independent coffee shops and cafes. There's nothing better than enjoying handcrafted cakes and pastries with a frothy cappuccino in our opinion. Lua A Baker's Café is right at the top of our list of the best independent coffee shops in the city. They've recently renovated their home in Alberton, adding a refreshing touch of whimsy to their interior. We visited them to enjoy a coffee and to take in the new décor. Needless to say, we were thoroughly impressed. Here's just a taste of what you can expect to find when you visit Lua A Baker's Café:
Down the rabbit hole
The newly renovated Lua Café reminds us of something out of a fairytale. Their new décor is distinctly Alice in Wonderland inspired; with bunches of red and white roses posed on the tables. Some of the chairs also have tiny hearts carved into their backs and you can spot a few roaming white rabbits around the restaurant. A fresh lick of white paint has done wonders for the interior as well. It is now just as bright as the outdoor courtyard and will make an excellent spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in the colder months.
If you prefer the fresh air, the outdoor area is still as lovely as ever. It's the perfect corner of the restaurant to catch up with old friends or quietly read a book. Lua offers free WIFI as well, so you can work without distraction. This eclectic eatery is great for business and pleasure, so stop by as soon as you can.
All about the coffee
Coffee connoisseurs will be delighted by Lua Cafe's offerings. They've got all the classics, as well as a few exciting new additions to the menu. Their "Spanish Lattes" are pretty as a picture and delicious as well. Made with espresso, condensed milk and coloured frothed milk, these are a divine treat. You can take your pick from a bright pink, purple or green frothed latte. Topped with a sweet pansy flower, we can't get enough of these whimsical drinks. We chose to pair ours with Lua Cafe's signature cinnamon and sugar pancakes. You could opt for a more extravagant pairing if you like. Lua Café is famed for their gourmet waffles, cakes and scones. Whichever you choose to indulge in, we're sure you'll be delighted.
If you've got more of a savoury palate, fear not. Lua Café boasts an exciting array of savoury dishes, including homestyle pies, biltong and brie waffles, and gourmet sandwiches. Our our pick off their savoury menu however, is the meatball waffle extravaganza. It hits the spot unlike any other savoury waffle dish we've tried. But don't take our word for it.
