About Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers
The organisation was founded on the idea that travel should improve communities and bridge cultural divides by the late Lebo Malepa, a proud Sowetan and pioneer of township tourism.
He transformed his great-grandparents’ house into the first backpackers lodge in a township in South Africa and tidied up his neighborhood, which now serves as a community park and a tourist destination bustling with all of our activities. They are proud to continue Lebo’s legacy today by promoting community-driven travel that prioritizes sustainability and local voices.
Lebo’s wife and business partner, Maria, originally from Sweden, joined the mission after relocating to South Africa. Together, they cultivated not only a thriving business but also a community-centred hub that uplifts its surroundings.
After Lebo’s untimely passing in 2021, Maria has continued to lead with the same spirit of innovation and heart.

Amazing Tours Within Soweto
What makes Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers unique are their walking, tuk tuk, and guided bicycle tours. You’ll explore Soweto’s famous landmarks and lesser-known areas under the guidance of local guides, who share authentic tales and intimate insights.
Tours at Lebo’s are crafted to showcase iconic sites. And to tell the full story of Soweto — its history, its vibrancy, and its ongoing evolution. Each tour begins with a panoramic view from a small koppie, offering sweeping vistas and an introduction to the area’s complex past and present.

The tours continue through historic sites in Orlando West. The Hector Pieterson Memorial, Vilakazi Street, and homes of freedom fighters like PAC leader Seth Motopeng.
The experience bridges heritage with present-day reality. Stopping at coffee shops and homes, demonstrating the township’s layers of development and daily life.
You’ll also take in local cuisine, artwork, and discussions that provide a deeper understanding of local culture.
In their outdoor restaurant, they offer guests a unique opportunity to sample township cuisine through their culinary and cooking experiences.
