In spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, why not dedicate some of your time to supporting charities and causes in need? There’s are plenty of places asking for assistance in volunteering, monetary donations, as well as wishlist donations and preloved item donations. Here’s where you can give back to the community this July.

Joburg Child Welfare

Everyone deserves a wonderful childhood, which is why the Joburg Child Welfare is doing everything in their power to provide care and support to underprivileged and orphaned children, families and communities. As an independent NPO, they are always grateful for donations that furnish their centres and help those in their care.

How you can help: Kitchen appliances, cooking utensils, household goods, furniture, clothing, toiletries and food. If they are unable to make good use of items, they will sell them in their charity shop in the CBD.

Tails and Whiskers

This Charity Stores accepts almost anything and everything that can be sold to raise money for charity. As their name suggests, the NPC sells donated sellable household items as a means to raise money for animals in need.

How you can help: You can donate clothing, furniture, electronics, jewellery, tools, kitchen appliances and utensils, carpets, silverware, brassware, paintings and artworks – anything!

Johannesburg Children’s Home

For children seeking refuge, The Johannesburg Children’s Home has become a safe haven. Kids aged between three and 18 years who have suffered neglect, abandonment or physical and emotional abuse get a chance to start a new life under the love and care of trained child care workers.

How you can help: They are currently running a hygiene drive, you can assist by donating bath soap, bath towels and toothpaste. Additionally, any second-hand items that are in good condition will be greatly appreciated.

SPCA Randburg

The SPCA Randburg needs your help to keep doing what they do best – taking care of animals in need. Make a difference by making a financial donation or donating pet food and blankets. You can also contribute by giving your unwanted goods to their Charity Store. And if you have nothing to give, why not offer some of your time to their volunteer programme?

How you can help: Pet food, blankets, second-hand books, furniture and clothes. As Winter is nearing, the SPCA is currently accepting blankets to keep their dogs warm and comfy.

Ann Harding Chesire Home

Ann Harding Chesire Home, is a care facility for adults between the ages of 18 and 54, who have a physical disability. The Non-Profit Organisation runs a successful charity shop on the premises of their home. Locals can assist by donating items to be sold as well as purchasing from the shop. If you have some time on your hands, volunteers are also need to assist at their charity store. Read about their volunteering opportunities here.

How you can help: All kinds of donations are appreciated, from household items and appliances to clothing and shoes and toys, among other items.

Kids Haven

Kids Haven provides and cares for children in crisis and supports activities so that families and communities can protect and nurture their children. You can assist the them by donating second hand items which they can sell in their shop. Alternatively, you can make a monetary donation or assist them with any wish list items they may have. How you can help: At the moment they need food items such as mielie meal, rice, beans and lentils and soup mix for food parcels for community families.

Nkosi’s Haven

Providing holistic care and a home for destitute HIV/AIDS-infected mothers, their children and orphans as a result of HIV-related deaths, Nkosi’s Haven is a safe haven without discrimination and prejudice.

How you can help: All kinds of donations are appreciated, from clothing and shoes to toys, bedding and furniture. You can also assist by donating money toward their school fee bill, uniforms would also be appreciated.
