Immune-Boosting Smoothie Bowl Recipes

Joburg Admin / April 1, 2020

Smoothie Bowl Prep

Before we begin our smoothie bowl making adventure, let’s first create a list of the fruit currently in season. The last thing you want to do is find the perfect smoothie bowl recipe only to discover that the ingredients are out of season. Here’s what you are likely to find on supermarket shelves between April to June:
  • Apples
  • Avocados
  • Blueberries
  • Citrus
  • Figs
  • Granadillas
  • Grapes
  • Gooseberries
  • Mangos
  • Papayas
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Plums
  • Pomegranates
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon

Stocking Up

If you are going to be making smoothie bowls regularly, we recommend always having at least one frozen chopped banana and any other frozen fruit on hand. Frozen banana is great for making your smoothie bowl both extra creamy and chilled. Other ingredients you may want to stock up on include dates (for natural sweetness), sugar-free granola (to serve as a crunchy topping) and coconut water (for added flavour).  Of course, you will also need a decent blender to get the perfect smoothie bowl consistency. If you have never tried your hand at making a smoothie bowl before, simply blend together your ingredients for about five to eight minutes until smooth (make sure to place the frozen fruit in first). Decanter into a generous serving bowl and top with a few crunchy elements.  Right, now that you’ve stocked up on all the fresh fruit and add-on ingredients you need, let’s get busy making those delicious smoothie bowls!

Mango Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients:
  • 1 ½ cups frozen sliced mango
  • 1 frozen sliced banana
  • ¼ avocado
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ¼ cup almond milk
  • 2 dates roughly chopped
  • Optional toppings: granola, dried coconut, fresh strawberries, banana slices
Health benefits: Mango is a low-calorie fruit which aids in digestion, lowers cholesterol and boosts immunity. With plenty of vitamin A and C, many consider mango to be a superfood.

Blueberry Bowl

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 frozen sliced banana
  • ½ cup baby spinach
  • 1 tsp natural honey
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • Optional toppings: fresh blueberries, coconut, chia seeds, diced almonds
Health benefits: Blueberries are also considered to be a superfood thanks to their antioxidant properties and high levels of vitamin C. These little pops of flavour are also a great source of fibre.

Peach And Orange Bowl

Ingredients:
  • 1 ½ cups frozen sliced peaches
  • 1 frozen sliced banana
  • ½ cup 100% orange juice (you can juice your own oranges if you want to reduce the sugar content)
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  •  ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • Optional toppings: fresh blackberries or blueberries, banana, chopped walnuts
Health benefits: We all know that oranges contain a good dose of immune-boosting vitamin C. But, did you know that peaches are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties? Inflammation is a key cause of sickness, so start getting those peaches in to fight off nasty winter colds and flu.  smoothie bowl Do you have any immune-boosting smoothie bowl recipes to share?
