The Bioscope Independent Cinema has brought cutting-edge local and international film features to Joburg movie lovers for over 10 years. And now that they have settled and reopened in their new home at 44 Stanley in Milpark, here’s why you need to pay them a visit this week or even over the weekend. 

You Need To Check Out The New Venue 

For a over decade, The Bioscope Independent Cinema has advertised itself as Joburg’s only truly independent cinema. Situated within the heart of the Maboneng Precinct, The Bioscope has offered Jozi film fundis the very best in local and international independent cinema. Not to mention their quirky repurposed car seats and legendary combo boxes, all of which have made a trip to The Bioscope a must on city explorers’ bucket lists.

The Bioscope has also been the host of many a film festival, promoting student work and independent artists throughout their 10 years in Maboneng. And, in case you missed it, in celebration of their 10th anniversary, The Bioscope has moved out of Maboneng and into a new home – 44 Stanley in Milpark!

If you have ever visited The Bioscope in Maboneng, you will know that their space has superbly limited. The move to 44 Stanley marks an evolution of the cinema, which will soon be offering bigger and better events, such as private screenings, parties and conferences.

There’s A Cute Little Gift Shop!

While you’re paying The Bioscope a visit, be sure to stop by their little gift shop, where you’ll be able to browse and buy an assortment of trinkets and mementos. You’ll be able to find an ever-growing collection of classic film posters for sale, as lets not forget to mention a special handpicked selection of cinema-themed Funkos Pops! Their sister company, Limited Edish has also set up shop too, right inside the lobby of The Bioscope.

Grab A Snack At The Bioscope Cafe

Before catching a movie, what is the one thing you do? That’s right — grab a bite to eat or stock up on a few snacks to take along with you into the cinema. This is where The Bioscope Café steps in for all of your yummy and delicious needs. This café specialises in pizza and toasted panini sandwiches, perfect if you’re looking to grab a full lunch or dinner before your movie. Also, they have a full bar, offering guests refreshing drinks ranging from ice-cold Slush Puppies to hot java. And best of all, no matter what you order from The Bioscope Café, you can tuck in and enjoy it inside the cinema atop the conveniently placed tables in front of you. They can also deliver food and drinks to you while you’re in the cinema, so you don’t have to miss a single second of the movie screening!

It’s Perfect For Date Night

Tired of the same old date night and are looking for something different to do with you sweetheart? then be sure to take a look at what The Bioscope Independent Cinema has to offer! They have just recently launched a brand-new signature event at their cinema — Date Night Movie Screenings! Each month, they will be screening a date night movie for you and your partner to enjoy together. March 2021’s date night movie was Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaption of the Shakespeare romantic tragedy, Romeo + Juliet. For the month of April, you and your significant other can watch the Beatles-inspired musical, Across The Universe (2007), on their big screen. Your R250 ticket covers you and a partner, and includes any pizza on their menu to share.

They Host A Variety Of Events

Other than a selection of movie screening series, such as the above-mentioned Date Night, and their Classic Movie Sundays and Classic Movie Kids, they do host some live events to keep their entertainment lineup diverse and exciting. During the month of April 2021, they’re be hosting live sessions from Celeste Ntuli, Ross Learmonth and Robby Collins. There will also be some stand-up comedy a little later this month with Talk That $h!t, featuring Mojak Lehoko, Shanray Van Wyk, and Lindy Johnson.
