Harpers Restaurant – A Little Bit Of Foodie Magic At Eastgate Mall

Harpers Restaurant is a paradise for cake and coffee lovers. Stop by this summer season for family discounts, signature cocktails and luxurious high tea.

Harpers Restaurant and Coffee Shop opened its doors at Eastgate Mall in 2017. However, what many of this cultured cafe’s loyal patrons don’t know is that the restaurant was first established in 1979. Bringing Joburg foodies top quality meals and service, Harpers has become a firm favourite among coffee and cake lovers. However, this chic eatery is not only about the sweet side of life. They also cater to meat lovers, vegetarians, Mexican food fans and Italian pasta aficionados. Harpers also has a few special surprises for the kids, so the whole family can come along for breakfast, lunch or an early dinner.

Not Your Typical Mall Restaurant

Harpers is not what we would call a mall restaurant. Tucked far away from the busy food court, this cafe is worthy of being called Bedfordview’s favourite coffee shop. With stylish gold fixtures, bold green prints and elegant lighting, Harpers is far from the average. It almost seems transported from a posh Rosebank hotel, with its display of perfectly piped cakes and pastries. Being quite far removed from the action of the mall, the restaurant is also lovely and quiet. The only downside is that the restaurant looks directly out onto the basement parking, but this can easily be ignored. Harpers is otherwise the perfect spot to catch up with friends or take your special someone on a brunch date.

Harpers

As Harpers is first and foremost a coffee shop and cakery, we recommend that you stop by the display stand on your way in. Even if you are visiting with the intention of having a sit down meal, you can always pick up something sweet for later. From delightful gingerbread men and ladies, to macarons and fruit carrot cake, Harpers is sure to have a dessert to delight your palate.

Harpers is also well known for their opulent high tea, offering a delicious selection of sandwiches, crumpets, scones, petit fours and cakes. Served with your selection of Twinings floral teas, this is high tea perfection.

Midsummer Specials

In honour of the impending summer season, Harpers has made an exciting announcement. They are now open on weeknights until 20:00. So, rather than slave over the hot stove at home, why not bring the family out for a luxurious dining experience at Harpers? If you visit them between 18:00 – 20:00 on Monday to Thursday, you will receive a 25% discount on your bill!

The restaurant’s menu is full of variety and features a number of cuisine influences. We recommend their signature Trinchado, tender cubes of beef fillet or succulent chicken in a creamy red wine and onion sauce, served with chips and lightly toasted ciabatta bread. Other favourites off the grill include the Beef Prego, Fillet of Hake and Grilled Beef Fillet. For something a little heartier, try the selection of curries. Their spin on classic Prawn Curry – spicy prawn curry cooked with peppers, onion, garlic, ginger and coconut milk – is fragrant and filling. It is served with basmati rice, tomato and onion sambal and poppadums. Yum!

The kiddies can enjoy an array of scrumptious dishes too. Specially adapted for smaller tummies, Harpers kiddies pastas and toasties are perfect as a mid-week dinner treat. If your little one has a sophisticated palate, bring them to Harpers on their birthday. They can indulge in hot chocolate with chocolate cream, dipped flake and marshmallows or three scoops of ice cream with chocolate sauce, while you tuck into a more grown up dessert drink. Your three options are Irish Coffee – totted with either whiskey, rum, kahlua, Amarula Cream or Frangelico; Amarula Dream – Amarula, Horlicks and cream; or a Frangelico hot chocolate, perfect with a slice of creamy cheesecake.

Tea-Infused Cocktails

Sometimes you needed a little me time away from the kids. Spoil yourself with one of Harpers’ signature cocktails or a refreshing G&T. The Admiral Grey is particularly popular – a cocktail invented to honour Admiral Grey, made with gin, cherry syrup, Campari, infused Earl Grey tea and tonic. If that doesn’t float your boat, then try the Watermelon Basil Gin and Tonic – watermelon syrup with basil leaves and fresh lemon, topped with tonic water. This summery, peppery gin and tonic combo will have you relaxed and refreshed. Invite a few friends along for a tropical-inspired cocktail party without any of the fuss of cleaning up afterwards!
