The voluptuous atmosphere, a fusion of the romantic past with an exciting present, potent and rich as a feisty cocktail, is full of nostalgia and déjà vu. It takes one back to the original, incomparable Back ‘O the Moon, a famous Sophiatown shebeen in the turbulent Fifties where everyone, rich, poor and in-between, met to feast on great jazz and great food to rub shoulders with great musicians: Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Thandi Klaarsen, Dorothy Masuka, The Manhattan Brothers, The Woody Wood Peckers, to mention a few of all the legends.
It has, despite its size, the cozy intimate feel of a sophisticated dine and dance venue. Live entertainment is offered every evening except on Sunday and Monday; the excellent cuisine is international: there’s charming private dining-room for intimate dinners and personal occasions seating 30; two well-stocked bars guarantee to restore your faith in human nature – and the divine décor reminds one that there were a few things in the restless past worth recalling.
The main room, on four interesting levels, seats 220 in complete comfort and is frequently filled to capacity. Besides the locals, people come here in droves from the North in search of glamour, fun, relaxation, good food and good company. They are never disappointed.
