First Thursdays In The City Makes A Comeback This Winter

Est. Reading: 3 minutes
What do you normally get up to on a Thursday evening? Netflix binge, Woolies microwave meal and early to bed? It's time to spice things up with Johannesburg's First Thursdays events. They're back and better than ever this chilly season, so throw on your woolly scarves and gloves and get out into the city to explore. First Thursdays

First Thursdays is a free-to-attend event which takes place all over the city on the first Thursday night of each month, bringing together art galleries, restaurants and retail spaces to liven up your midweek. Explore your city on foot and hop from one venue to the next, uncovering all the sights and sounds that Joburg has to offer. There is no set tour or guided walk, only the freedom to do as you please (until 21:00 at least).

The First Thursdays platform is dedicated to helping you find the most awesome events in the city. After a two-year hiatus, they are back and better than ever. Their new home base at 44 Stanley in Milpark is the perfect venue to get you back in the spirit of exploration. Events will also be held in Rosebank and Braamfontein in months to come, but for now we are super excited to get our feet wet at 44 Stanley's plethora of hip and happening events. The First Thursdays Winter Programme officially kicked off on Thursday, 02 June, but there is still loads to come for the season. Here are our top picks for the upcoming First Thursdays July edition.

Arts & Culture

Joburg's galleries come alive on First Thursdays. If you have never visited the artist studios and galleries at 44 Stanley, this is your chance to do so. Galleries and studios are rarely open late to the public, so don't miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity. There are a number of exhibitions on this July. Come and explore artists in collaboration and marvel at their creative genius. We are most excited to stroll through the 'The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember' exhibition. An archival masterwork, this exhibition is a celebration of hard-fought freedoms and South African history. The Library provides a multisensory experience for spectators to enjoy. Come prepared to wonder, learn and discover things you never have before.

What would First Thursdays be without Joburg's best foodie hot spots? Bring your friends and family along for epic dining experiences at 44 Stanley's top restaurants. Even After All is an all-day restaurant and bar inspired by 1970s small town diners. Morning, noon and night, they serve some of the best comfort food in the city. Grab a bite to eat and a fancy cocktail from them before you head out on your First Thursdays expedition. It's the perfect way to kick off an evening of new discoveries and adventures.

Alternatively, you could close out the night at Peachy - Milpark's only award-winning dine bar. Come and enjoy their specialty cocktails and tapas plates. This coming First Thursday, Peachy will play host to DJ Bob, Flames Shilowa and Umlando Da Skeleta for a vinyl-only session of jazz beats. Cozy up by the fireplace and enjoy some rare sounds till late into the night. Entrance is free, so you've really got no excuse not to be there.
