This lush sanctuary offers a perfect retreat from our busy lives. From scenic trails to plenty of beautiful flora and fauna, Wonderboom Nature Reserve promises an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
Visit Wonderboom Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of Wonderboom in Pretoria, you’ll find the tranquil and stunning Wonderboom Nature Reserve. What makes this destination unique is the fact that it is found in the middle of a bustling city, however, from the moment you step into the reserve, you’ll feel as if you have been transported to a calm haven.
This 200-hectare reserve is well-known for its magnificent Ficus salicifolia, a wild fig tree called the “Wonderboom”, that stands near the entrance. This fig tree is more than 1 000 years old, and as legend has it, it has grown to be this big because the chief of an indigenous tribe was buried beneath its roots. It is recorded that the tree was once large enough to shade 1 000 people or 22 ox wagons with 20 oxen.
Explore The Beautiful Hiking Trails
For those keen on exploring the reserve’s natural beauty on foot, three well-marked hiking trails wind through the lush vegetation. Expect to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Birdwatchers can spot a variety of bird species that call the reserve home, including the elusive Narina Trogon and the colourful African Hoopoe.
The most popular trail has to be the route that takes hikers to the fort. It’s a steep inclined trail to get to this feature, but we highly recommend you push yourself to see a living piece of history. The run-down fort can be found on the summit of the Magaliesberg. The fort is old, having been built during the Second Boer War.
Pack A Picnic
Absorb the beautiful surrounding of the Wonderboom Nature Reserve by taking some time to relax and indulge in a picnic. There’s a lovely picnic area near the parking area. Also, there are designated braai spots available as well. Just ensure that you clean up after your visit to keep this reserve litter-free and clean.
Also, you’ll have the possibility of seeing the free-roaming zebra that live on the reserve. Adding to the wildlife diversity of this reserve.
