We were recently invited for a mini-break at Kievits Kroon Country Estate in Kameeldrift-East (just outside Cullinan, for those of you who are as geographically impaired as I am) and with spring in the air and a craving to explore beyond our city’s borders, my wife and I hopped in the car and began the 45 minute journey to a much-needed getaway of bliss.
On initial arrival at the estate, visitors are welcomed by an entrance made up of a pathway of lush trees with a majestic Cape Colonial building in the background. Based on my first impressions, we had an amazing experience ahead of us.
Our weekend began with a picnic in the garden which entailed a blanket laid out in the estate’s beautiful gardens with a picnic basket exploding with delectable goodies including (and let me just state that this was for two of us): potato salad, a cheese platter, liver pate, roast beef, roast chicken, smoked salmon, vegetarian wraps etc. etc. etc. Obviously, this was followed by a dessert spread and a half – the inner glutton in me, however, was not complaining.
After lunch, we made our way to the Wineland Spa where we were treated to a full body massage. The spa offers an array of packages and treatments and is a must visit for all those looking to completely unwind from the stresses that come with living the fast paced Jozi lifestyle.
The estate has two restaurants on site and we sat down for dinner at the venue’s signature restaurant, Granita. It is renowned for its 6-course tasting menu which is made up of a fusion of gourmet flavours with a wine pairing per course.
Dinner was made up of a Caprese salad amuse bouche, a starter of goat’s cheese custard with roasted baby beetroot and red wine reduction (served with a fine Haute Cabriere Unwooded Pinot Noir), a fish course of seared tuna with turnip puree, pickles and a wasabi foam (served with Darling Cellars Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc).
And, of course, every fine dining marathon needs to have a lemonade granita at some stage to cleanse the pallet. The main act for the evening was a duo of grilled beef fillet, confit duck leg, butternut puree and bok choy with port jus (served with Diemersfontein Pinotage).
The meal concluded with a sweet treat of vanilla rum mousse with coconut sand and quinoa wafers (which was served with Thelema Muscat De Frontignan). At this stage, we were left highly satisfied, exceptionally full and, to be honest with you, rather drunk… but all in the day’s work of a lifestyle journalist.
Our room was in line with the expectations that we had developed from the rest of our experience at Kievits Kroon Country Estate and offered all the luxuries and comforts that we all owe ourselves. We had an amazing night’s rest and woke up ready to take the new Joburg week head on.
