Looking for a peaceful escape this weekend? Just a short drive from Johannesburg, Irene Country Lodge, Autograph Collection® is the perfect destination for a luxurious winter getaway, romantic weekend, or...
The commitment of the Joburg Underground Film Festival lies in its dedication to curate a selection of experimental, radical, and unconventional cinema sourced from all corners of the world. The festival takes place over Friday, 8 September and Saturday, 9 September 2023.
Distinguished as one of the few festivals within Sub-Saharan Africa exclusively centered on experimental short films, their objective is to present an assembly of revolutionary African cinema alongside remarkable works from across the globe. The festival program encompasses a spectrum of boundary-pushing creations characterised by their technical finesse and aesthetic novelty, all the while prioritising distinct and unconventional viewpoints.
JUFF DAY 2 (Friday, 8 September)
On this day, the lineup features six remarkable short films hailing from Spain, South Africa, and the USA. The collection includes a neo-noir homage to Johannesburg, a visually opulent sequence of animated light paintings, an intense exploration into a young man’s fixation with the dark web, and more. (Please be advised that the content contains explicit material and is recommended for adult audiences.) Following the screening, there will be an interactive session with the filmmakers.
JUFF DAY 3 (Saturday, 9 September)
This day’s program includes six captivating short films representing The UK, South Africa, the USA, and Italy. Among the offerings is a narrative of a young woman’s reality-altering journey post-trepanation, a stop-motion science fiction saga, an exploration of the relationship between electricity pylons and the landscape crafted using hand-processed super 8mm film, and more. Following the screening, an opportunity for dialogue with the filmmakers awaits.
For those passionate about pioneering cinema, the Joburg Underground Film Festival is an opportunity to indulge in daring and innovative creations from diverse corners of the world.
