This year marks the 28th anniversary of the South African Constitution. It is a pivotal document that lays the groundwork for a society built on tolerance, peace, and prosperity, safeguarding the rights of its citizens. The festival and walk takes place on Sunday, 24 March 2024.
What Can I Expect From The Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill?
Former President Nelson Mandela, upon signing the new South African constitution into law at Sharpeville on December 10, 2006, expressed, “We give life to our nation’s prayer for freedom regained and a continent reborn.” The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa; 1996 was envisioned not only as a beacon of hope for South Africa but also for the African continent and the world, serving as a vital framework for the protection of human rights.
On March 24th, 2024, from 7 am to 12 pm, Constitution Hill will host a symbolic walk to honour constitutionalism. This walk, tracing a path around significant points, encourages participants to express their support through carrying messages on placards, engaging in conversations while walking, and drumming for constitutionalism. The “We the People” walk, covering 8 and 5 kilometers symbolically, was inaugurated in 2014 and drew over 4000 participants in 2016.
This is an open invitation to you and your staff members to participate in the walk. As you stand in solidarity with South Africans and reaffirm your commitment to constitutional values. Your organisation, as a key proponent in championing constitutionalism and the promotion of human rights, is invited to join the walk by supporting a cause aligned with its objectives and mandate.
