This special evening celebrates the return of real listening in a space inspired by the legacy of Hugh Masekela. These jazz nights are high on our list of recurring entertainment in Joburg that you may not know about, so you're in for a treat!

What Can I Expect From Siya Makuzeni At Hugh’s Jazz Club?

Hugh’s Jazz Club on Juta Street in Braamfontein introduces a refined addition to Joburg’s live music scene. Inspired by the spirit of Hugh Masekela, the venue honours a powerful musical lineage that doesn't need further explaining. It's a special space, providing a platform for contemporary jazz artists to share their gifts with Joburgers. If you're a long-time jazz fan, this is a paradise. If you're not, you're about to become one! The acoustics are carefully designed to hold silence and sound with equal clarity, and the setting is every bit as plush as you'd imagine, with a layout that prioritises comfort and connection.

Taking the stage on the 19th is Siya Makuzeni, recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz in 2016. Makuzeni is a celebrated trombonist, vocalist, and composer whose career spans local and international collaborations. She's performed alongside Themba Mkhize, Khaya Mahlangu, and Sibongile Khumalo, and has appeared with global jazz figures such as David Murray and Branford Marsalis.

Her performance promises depth, technical brilliance, and emotional resonance. You can look forward to some stunning horn arrangements and layered vocals grounded in South Africa’s rich jazz heritage. Each note is intentional, and every moment invites attentive listening. Music speaks to the heart, after all.

Hugh’s Jazz Club offers an intimate atmosphere that draws the audience closer to the language all people around the world understand: music. This is a night for true jazz lovers and anyone looking for a taste of culture in the city. If you don't listen to very much jazz, this is an evening that'll likely change that. Don't miss it!
