The State Theatre
The State Theatre is one of the largest theatres in Gauteng. Take a short trip to Pretoria this December for their 12th annual Mzansi Fela Music Festival. Hosted in aid of raising awareness around xenophobia, gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS, this two week festival will see some of South Africa’s best veteran and up-and-coming musicians share the stage. Artists include Zonke, Thandiswa Mazwai, Caiphus Semenya, Samthing Soweto and Ringo Madlingozi. This is the ideal way to welcome in the summer, and celebrate SA’s musical talent, so book your tickets ASAP!

If there is only one theatre show you see this December, make it Janice Honeyman’s Pantomime Spectacular – Jack and the Beanstalk! This is Honeyman’s 32nd annual Panto. Brightening up the Joburg Theatre stage with even more rip-roaring fun, this year’s Panto is a delight for audiences of all ages. This is one that you can take the kids along to, as well as granny, grandpa and even those sourly teen family members. Be prepared to sing, dance and laugh until your belly aches.

There are tons of family-friendly Christmas theatre shows to attend this December. However, the icing on the cake goes to Peter Pan On Ice at the Teatro Montecasino. Performing a number of acrobatic ice tricks, all the while telling Pan and Wendy’s story of pure adventure, the kids will be delighted by the ice capades on stage while you will be transported back to your childhood imaginings of Neverland. Pieter Toerien Theatre
While you are at Montecasino, pop by the Pieter Toerien Theatre. Showcasing two awesome Christmas-themed shows this December, the Pierer Toerien Theatre is the place to be for festive cheer and good theatre. Take your pick from Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol or the smashing musical Santa Claus is coming to town! In fact, you may as well see both shows. After all, what’s the harm in embracing the season whole heartedly and with plenty goodwill?

The Theatre of Marcellus
Emperors Palace is famed for their annual Festival of Lights, however the Theatre of Marcellus also lights up this December as gospel super star Ntokozo Mbambo takes to the stage. If you have time in between visiting Santa’s Village and the Elves’ Workshop, then stop by the theatre for a symphony of song in Mbambo’s show, The First Noel. Singing all of your favourite Christmas carols, she will take you on a journey through the Christmas story. It’s a real treat for the soul and the ears!

The Market Theatre
This December, Dr John Kani returns to the Market Theatre stage in The Lion and The Lamb. This witty re-telling of the Christ story has captivated audiences of all denominations and beliefs for decades. If you are looking for a gritty, South African theatre show to sink your teeth into this festive season, then let it be this. Kani will be backed by some of South Africa’s best vocal voices, including Nokukhanya Dlamini, Gugu Shezi and Nomfundo Dlamini, Lerato Gwebu, Lerato Mvelase, Itumeleng Tshabane and Avril Mkansi.
