Winter is fast approaching, and if you’re looking to enjoy a decadent wintry dessert to warm you up from the inside out, we have a few suggestions. Whether you’re craving something rich and sweet, or something warm and moreish, our list of winter dessert spots in Joburg will certainly delight!
Malva Pudding
Winter is all about Malva Pudding! This spongy, warm, and oh-so delicious Cape Dutch pudding made with apricot jam is definitely a firm favourite during the colder months. Top it with warm vanilla custard and we’re in heaven.
We highly recommend that you visit Pigalle Sandton and Bedfordview to order their decadent and moreish Malva Pudding. Mikes Heritage House in Parktown also serves a mean and oh-so good Malva dish. Another great option is The Grillhouse! And if you would prefer to have it at home, pop into Woolies and shop for one of their readymade Malva Pudding. Just warm it up and the oven and enjoy!
Apple Crumble
Next on our warm dessert list is Apple Crumble! If you love flake and crumbly tarts with delicious baked fruit, then this is most certainly a winner. Top it with some cream, ice cream, or custard and you have the ideal winter warmer.

Carrot Cake
Who doesn’t love Carrot Cake? We know we do! It’s definitely on of those slices that’s sure to put a smile on your face. Pecan and walnuts nuts and a bit of cinnamon, mixed in with carrots and batter and you get something scrumptious. Add cream or custard if you want some added sweetness.
Stop by Gabriella’s Tea Room in Parktown North when the Carrot Cake craving hits. Also, the sophisticated and elegant Olive & Plates in Hyde Park offers a selection of decadent cakes, including Carrot Cake! Healthy but want a treat? Sago Pudding
So, this one, we don’t see in restaurants often. Sago Pudding, AKA Tapioca Pudding, can be enjoyed hot or cold. Both ways are equally as delicious! If you haven’t tried this dessert, we highly suggest you do!
We’ve only heard of one restaurant in Joburg that actually has this on their menu, and that’s TANG Asian Luxury Restaurant and Bar in Sandton. It’s an indulgent twist on the original Sago Pudding that we, and definitely worth ordering – The Salted Caramel and Coconut Sago Pudding. Otherwise, you can pop into Woolies and Checkers, and grab a few of their Sago Pudding pots to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
Sticky Toffee Pudding
And last but certainly not least on our warm desserts list is Sticky Toffee Pudding! Baked with dates and smothered in a delicious toffee sauce, this is another winter warmer treat that we’re sure to enjoy this chilly season.
Sit down at either Ribs & Burgers and Thunder Gun to tuck into a plate of this sweet, decadent and sticky goodness. Or, if you’d prefer to take some Sticky Toffee Pudding home to enjoy with your family, shop at Woolies. All you have to do is pop it in the oven for a few minutes and voilà! You can also top it with some cream, ice cream or custard!
