Host Your Own Wine Pairing Evening At Home

What You Will Need

Learning the art of pairing food and wine can be exceptionally tricky. If you are a complete novice, you may want to start out slowly with only a few pairings. But if you are a more seasoned wine taster, try experimenting a little with your food and wine combinations. Remember that it's all about finding balance between the sweet, salty, tangy and acidic flavours, as well as the tannins in the wine.

It's important that you balance the weight of the wine and the food you are pairing it with. No, this doesn't mean getting out your kitchen scale. Weight is the way the wine coats the inside of your mouth, whether it's light and fleeting or heavy and lingering. The general rule of thumb is that if you are eating something sweet, pair it with a sweet wine. Salty flavours and rich foods on the other hand pair better with full bodied reds.

Pairing wines with cheese is an art of sorts. Bold, pungent cheeses can be incredibly difficult to balance out. To help you navigate this minefield of tastes, we've scoured our resources for the most commonly paired wines and cheeses. Check out this comprehensive list by Top Wine SA to get on the right track. Once you've got an idea of the wines and cheeses you would like to pair together, you can begin setting up your wine tasting evening. Our personal choice would be a selection of hard and soft cheeses and a variety of white wines to pair them with, but it's totally up to you.

Where To Get It

You don't want to invite your friends to a virtual box wine and mouldy Gouda tasting, so it's best to prepare in advance. Thankfully under level 3 lockdown, we are allowed to purchase alcohol again, so either head out to the bottle store (mask on, please) or get shopping online. We recommend the Good Wine Shop for premium Cape wines at affordable prices. It may take a few weeks for your order to arrive, so best not schedule your wine pairing evening before you have your stock on hand. Of course if you simply can't wait to have a wine tasting season, you can order good quality wines from Takealot.com.

Now, for the cheese. You shouldn't have to go too far to find a few good cheeses (Checkers, anyone?), but if you really want to go all out, check out these top Italian delis in the city. Most of these delis should be operating in level 3 lockdown, so you can pop in for a quick look around and some helpful advice. Pick up a few packets of crunchy crackers or crisp white bread while you're out and you'll be set for a fabulous tasting.

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the cream, spices, butterscotch and softened butter.

  4. Fill a frosted glass about 2/3 full with cold vanilla cream soda.
  5. Pour the chilled butterbeer batter over the back of a spoon and into the glass. It will naturally rise to the top and float on the soda. Make this layer as thick as you like, but go slow because it will grow fast.
  6. Serve it with a straw or drink it straight from the glass.

*Butterscotch Sauce Recipe

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Heat the butter in a saucepan. Add the sugar and golden syrup, and stir over a gentle heat until sugar dissolves.

Support Your Favourite Local Restaurant By Buying Vouchers To Use Post-Lockdown

Where To Buy Restaurant Vouchers

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown, many restaurants have been left without a source of steady revenue. Even now, as many reopen their kitchens for home deliveries, the industry is in a dire state of affairs. However, many innovative campaigns have sprung up in reaction to these restaurants' plight, offering their loyal diners the opportunity to buy vouchers to use once lockdown has reached a stage where in-house dining is allowed:

Rally For Your Bar And Restaurant With Stella Artois

Stella Artois is backing local pubs, bars and restaurants during these difficult times by launching the Rally For Your Bar And Restaurant campaign. Their mission is to keep these vulnerable entities afloat to ensure that when COVID-19 is eventually defeated, we will be able to get back to our favourite watering holes in the city.

"Bars and restaurants are where we gather with friends and family. They're where we celebrate milestones and make memories. They're an important part of our lives, and right now, many face the prospect of closing their doors for good," they write on their website.

To prevent this from happening, Stella Artois will contribute 50% of however much you spend on a restaurant or bar voucher to use in future. You can purchase a R100, R250 or R500 voucher to show your support, and if your favourite local hangout isn't listed on their website, you can nominate them here. Here are just a few bars, restaurants and pubs already listed with the campaign:

Food vouchers range between R200 - R3 000, and at least 50% of the proceeds for each restaurant will go towards staff relief funds. Vouchers are redeemable for three years.

A Slice Of Modern Italy In Parkhurst

Modena Found Its Way To Johannesburg

Built on the pillars of  life, family and culture, Modena Italian Eatery offers a glimpse of the European lifestyle in the centre of Parkhurst. As its name suggests, Modena is inspired by the region in Italy of the same name. It brings authentic Italian dishes to the table in its purest and simplest forms - no substitutions or additives, creating an authentic Italian experience.

Vassilios Holiasmenos is the chef and owner of Modena, and prides himself in offering guests a memorable experience from farm to fork - as they put it, looking after the guests as if they were dining in his own home. Hospitality is a non-negotiable core of Modena's doctrine - with Holiasmenos living the passion and love of food, it comes as no surprise.

"A tradition of lyrical beauty, classical line, musicality, finesse, attention to detail, the warmth of spirit and the flame of dance - all the attributes necessary to make a good restaurant. And what is a professional restaurant's task, but to carry the audience into a world of fantasy and magic." - Modena Italian Eatery.

A Feast At Modena

The kitchen at Modena brings you all the Italian favourites from gnocchi to seafood - and, of course, includes everyone's favourite Neapolitan pizza and homemade pasta. Their menu has a traditional presentation, with all the dishes ordered categorically, making it easy to find your favourites. One can choose to indulge in classics, such as Arancini Porcini or Napolitana di Modena - a traditional tomato ragu served with bocconcini mozzarella over homemade pasta. For the more adventurous of taste, one can opt to try the Squid Ink Angelhair with Crab and Octopus, The Marrow or even Ostriche Fresche - fresh oysters with lemon, black pepper, Campari granita and homemade smoked Tabasco. With modern takes on Tiramisu and Panna Cotta to end off the evening, how can it be a better experience?

The Space

Nestled in the heart of Parkhurst, Modena is taking advantage of the street space to enhance the authenticity by creating European-inspired outdoor seating. The interior is a mixture of contemporary and Italian artistry. The space features a contemporary chevron pattern, created with metals on both the floors and some of the walls.

With its contemporary and classic feel, it is a space to behold. On the classical side of things, the restaurant features a sculpture created on one of the walls as an ode to the Greek and Roman gods.

"As an attribute of both Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and the chief god, Zeus, Nike was represented in art as a small figure carried in the hand by those divinities."

A nod to the purity and authenticity of the old Italian cooking traditions, a horizontal wreath-inspired piece hangs from the roof - once more creating that atmosphere of being in an authentic Italian house.

“A new space created by Vassilios Holiasmenos, Chef and Entrepreneur, Modena Italian is a beautifully unique restaurant designed specifically to focus on the things that make Italian cuisine so loved by all.” - Modena Italian Eatery.

Visit Cafe Hemingway's For A Personalised High Tea Experience

Cafè Hemingway's At First Glance

Cafè Hemingway's is situated within an unassuming shopping centre in Kyalami. However, this New York style bistro, bar and patisserie is anything but ordinary. Upon entrance, you immediately pick up the vibe of the place - a space for intimate conversation with old friends, brimming with the glow of satisfied customers. There is an outdoor seating area should you be in need of a little fresh air or some fair Joburg sunshine. But, the real magic takes place inside.

Drink Me

Firstly, the bar is a marvel. Aptly named Bar Hemingway's, this handmade copper bar is stocked with over 140 different whiskies from all over the world, including Japan, India and Ireland. The bar team offer tastings and food pairings at your request. And, if you aren't a fan of whisky, they offer rum, wine or champagne tasting experiences.

Cafe Hemingways

Eat Me

Bar Hemingway's also boasts an impressive gastro pub menu. Their most notable dishes include the Atticus Finch platter (think gourmet cheeses, cold meats & smoked salmon, served with assorted pickled vegetables & fresh baked artisan bread). If you are looking for something more filling, try out one of their gourmet burgers. The 'Whopper Toppa' features a massive real beef patty and a variety of perfectly paired toppings with shoestring fries.

Alternatively, ask for the bistro menu, which is a little more fine dining. The restaurant's in-store specials change daily depending on what their team of chefs source at organic markets. Pop in for one of their famous breakfast delights - pancakes dripping with mascarpone cheese and fresh fruit, or a full English breakfast. Or, take that special someone on a one-of-a-kind date night. Indulge in authentic ceviche (Efrain - served with citrus quinoa, micro coriander & fresh chillies), while sipping on fine wine under romantic incandescent light.

Personalised High Tea

While Cafè Hemingway's savoury menu is a treat to behold, their dessert selection is where they really shine. You could opt to visit the restaurant and enjoy a few sweet delights off their pre-set menu. Or, you could go all out and contact them to craft a personalised high tea for yourself and up to 10 friends. The cafès high tea experience is centered around an old-fashioned sensibility - that high tea is an event which should be slowly savoured. Nevertheless, their master pâtissier's are happy to custom design the menu for your high tea event. And, while they do root themselves in classic pastry making, their contemporary creations often break the mould (quite literally).

There are a selection of themes to choose from for your customised high tea event. Opt for the Alice In Wonderland experience, or the Isobel high tea for a classic and romantic event. If you are more of a rabble rousing tea lover, go for the Great Gatsby themed party or the Run for the Roses experience - a Kentucky themed high tea. Your menu will be planned according to your chosen theme and any dietary specifications you may have. Hemingway's will also bake you a custom birthday cake to accompany your tea if you so wish.

Behind Closed Doors Lies A Sleeping Wonderland

As a closing note, we have to mention the special secret high tea venue tucked neatly away behind the main restaurant area. What looks like a simple bookcase adorned with hardback covers, is actually a set of sliding doors. The doors open onto a private dining area, featuring a large wooden table, able to seat up to 10 guests. Book lovers will be amazed by the wonderment of this room. Secret high tea surrounded by books... what could be better?

Great Gin & Tonic Joints In Joburg

Social on Main – Bryanston

Social on Main in Bryanston is a fantastic spot if you’re looking to hang out with your mates and sip on unique and interesting cocktails and concoctions. Try anything from their Social G&T menu and up your gin game. The Strawberry & Vanilla G&T is fabulous! If you’re looking for a little freshness, try the Mint & Cherry that combines sweet and sour with mint.

Workshop 55 – Parktown North

If you’re looking to sip and sample your way through one of the widest selections of gin in the city, then Workshop 55 is where you need to be. They are known for blending interesting and tantalising gin infusions, as well as offering a few rare finds into the mix. Not only do they bring guests the best in gin, but they also have some high-quality tonics, such as Fentimans and Fever-Tree, to enhance your gin experience.

Kream – Mall of Africa, Midrand

There was a big hype about Kream when it opened - with great food, attentive service and a great atmosphere, it's no wonder. It’s ideal for a special occasion dinner or if you simply want to enjoy a grapefruit gin with a few friends after an afternoon of shopping at the Mall of Africa. So, if you haven’t been yet, make a stop at this trendy spot when you’re in the area.

011 Dainfern by The Baron – Sandton

Trendy and upmarket with a dash of steampunk, 011 Dainfern is a gin bar that caters to everyone. Tonic – Linden

One of our favourite suburbs has just become a lot cooler. Al La Bouffe (that French restaurant opposite Red Pepper Productions) in Linden has added a gin bar to its shop floor. It's called Tonic and makes use of top Joburg mixologists to bring you the very best concoctions in the latest booze craze to hit SA. But, and this is a big but, the cocktails are a bit on the expensive side, so be sure to visit Tonic in Linden after payday.

Gin and Tonic in Joburg

The Countess – Melville

Next on our list is The Countess in Melville. Since this area is becoming one of the coolest hangouts for the young and young at heart, it’s only fitting to add this contemporary bar to the mix. Their bar is stocked with a wide collection of craft beers and gins, so you’re most certainly going to find something to sip on.

Time Anchor Distillery – Maboneng

Though it's not quite open to the public, we need to include this on our list. Time Anchor Distillery makes vodka, rum and gin right in the heart of the city. This small-batch distillery does, however, host tours of their factory where patrons can experience all of the spirits they create. If you're into gin then this is the place for you. Gather the gang and book yourself a tasting experience at Time Anchor Distillery in Maboneng.

The Artisan – Greenside

If you ever find yourself on the Greenside strip craving a gin and tonic, then pay The Artisan a visit. Poison City Craft Beer Is Headed To Johannesburg

Bad ass craft brewing company Poison City is on its way to Jozi and will arrive in the beginning of September 2016. The Durban based brewery was found by two friends, Greame and Andre who grew up with surfboards under their arms and punk rock blaring through the stereo. The energy and freedom found in riding waves and listen to fast music has been channelled into the suds they create. What started out as a hobby soon evolved into something beyond business and beyond passion - a lifestyle.

The Johannesburg launch party took place at the Banister Hotel. Greame and Andre brought Durban street artist Shaun Oakley, AKA Damn Vandal along to tag up Braamfontein. After the tasting of Poison City's beer guests were lead into the Banister's basement where another Durbanite was waiting. Comedian John Vlismas tossed a couple of insults around, made people laugh and called it a night.

There are currently two exceptionally well crafted Poison City Brewing brews on the market – The Bird, our light-malt, thirst quenching session lager; and The Punk Rocker, our English pale ale. For more information check out Poison City's official website.
