The Joburg jazz scene is alive and kicking at one of Maboneng's hottest spots - Bertrand Café. We recently discovered this hidden gem when venturing down Fox Street. An eclectic blend of coffee shop, restaurant and jazz bar, Bertrand Café keeps the entertainment coming until almost midnight! You could quite literally arrive in the morning for a cup of coffee and finish the night off on the dancefloor, all in this one space.
Their food is just as good. Come and enjoy one of their famous sandwiches or wraps at lunchtime - our favourite is the classic French baguette with roast beef and vegetables. Bertrand Cafe's biggest drawcard is its nightlife offerings, however. Read on to find out more.
Bertrand Jazz Lounge
Bertrand Café is divided into three sections. An outdoor area that overlooks the bustling Maboneng street, an antique style interior and the bar area.
The stage is set up to allow the sultry sounds of the saxophone to permeate throughout the space. So, sit wherever takes your fancy and enjoy the melodic jazz that brings Bertrand Café to life. The café hosts regular events, including The Church of Blues featuring Yonela Mnana and Dalisu Ndlazi every First Thursday of the month. They also host a Wednesday karaoke and pizza night. Bring a buddy along to enjoy a fun sing along, a pizza and two ciders for only *R180. You can keep up to date with events happening at Bertrand Café by following them on Instagram.
African Cuisine Mondays
Maboneng is one of the biggest hot spots in the city for traditional African cuisine. Stop by Bertrand Café on Monday evenings for their African Cuisine feast. They serve up a delightful array of North African delicacies including Jollof rice and goat stew, as well as Central and Southern African Saka Saka and Mogodu. Come and enjoy the wholesome flavours of African cuisine served alongside a chilled beer or fruity cocktail from the bar. If there was ever a way to beat the Monday blues, this is it.
Bertrand Café also boasts an eclectic set menu, featuring strong French cuisine influences. Their standout main dishes include a juicy rib eye steak served with seasonal veggies and your choice of sauce, a delicious seafood platter, and a slow-roasted confit duck leg. This is not your standard café grub! Paired with a tall glass of wine and the jazzy sounds of the café, we can't think of a more satisfying way to enjoy a meal.
