Young South African Artists Unite In Song To Celebrate Health Care Workers

Joburg Admin / April 16, 2020

The Ultimate South African Song Medley

In a bid to show their support for health care professionals and other essential workers, a group of young, talented South African artists have come together from their individual homes while under lockdown to create the "Ultimate South African Song Medley". This medley incorporates 28 of the most instantly recognizable classic South African songs from music icons across diverse genres from the last 50 years. The medley includes music by Brenda Fassie, Kurt Darren, Mandoza, PJ Powers, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, The Parlotones, Miriam Makeba, Four Jacks and a Jill, Sonja Herholdt and Mafikizolo, to name but a few. These songs not only showcase the rich musical culture of South Africa, but bring us together during this time of dire circumstance as we look back on fond memories.  song medley

The Brave Campaign

Adcock Ingram, one of South Africa's most trusted pharmaceutical manufacturers, have championed local health care workers through their Sponsors of the Brave campaign. They are encouraging all South Africans to #StayHome and #StaySafe during the lockdown period, as well as to recognise those who are putting their lives at risk daily by going to work, such as nurses, doctors, pharmacists, paramedics, grocery store cashiers and the armed forces. The Brave campaign aims to celebrate these courageous South Africans and to uplift local communities during these trying times. To assist in their endeavors, Adcock Ingram brought on board Stageworx Performing Arts School to perform the "Ultimate South African Song Medley". The medley is performed by 50 students and alumni from Stageworx Performing Arts School and is arranged by top theatre and event music director and arranger, Bryan Schimmel.

Bringing It All Together

Gemma Marinus, Director of Stageworx Performing Arts School, explains the procedure of putting this video together: "The brief was sent out to +/- 160 of our students (current and alumni) including some students that have already made a name for themselves in the arts industry, such as John Tsenoli, Phil Higgins, Yahto Kraft and Marianthe Panas."   She continues "Everyone jumped at the chance to be part of the project. We sent all our students harmonies and certain lead lines that they had to record at home on their cellphones. They then sent back all the recordings. From there, Matthew Marinus mixed all the vocal recordings and we sent back for everyone to record their videos (again on their cellphones). The level of enthusiasm and talent that was sent through to us was incredible." Watch the video below: [embed]https://youtu.be/YFFZaFbKF5o[/embed]

Nominate Your Hero

Now that you've got that spring back in your step and a little light in your heart thanks to this awesome medley of music, nominate a heroic health care professional in your community for the Sponsors of the Brave prize! You can nominate any pharmacist or health care worker in your community who is going above and beyond to make a difference. A judging panel will select two winners from the nominees. The winners will take home an all expenses paid trip to an overseas medical conference of their choice for themselves, and the opportunity to pay it forward by donating R25 000 to a registered NPO charity of their choice. Plus, you could win R5 000 simply by making a nomination! So, come on and show these unsung heroes some love and appreciation.
