Wundercook was born from the idea of allowing South Africans easy access to Asian ingredients, ready to eat products and desserts from an online store. Wundercook's website has clear categories for vegan, vegetarian and halaal products, as well as links to recipes you can use them for, to help mitigate the confusion of buying ingredients with unfamiliar names, Wundercook is a young company consisting of two sisters who want to show case a range of locally made, healthy and nutritious food and ingredients from Asia, focusing on Taiwanese meals.

They provide preservative, additives and MSG free Asian ingredients and meals. By sourcing from small Asian South African businesses, they are able to make these readily available online for delivery straight to your door. Wundercook also promotes the vegan, vegetarian and halaal options of Asian cuisine. Their website provides easy to navigate categories for you to find the ingredients that may be unfamiliar to you but you require for any Asian recipes you may be following. You can find gluten-free, vegan friendly sauces as well as all the products to recreate your favourite Chinese restaurant dishes at home.

The History & Journey Behind Wundercook

"One thing that has kept me grounded during this pandemic has been to indulge in my childhood comfort foods. Dishes that evoke memories and bring my olfactory senses straight back to my parents home town, Taipei Taiwan." Meet Susan and her sister, Elle. They're part of the community of Taiwanese diaspora living in South Africa. They are the 18th largest Taiwanese immigrant community living outside of Taiwan. When travel was still open prior to pandemic, lockdowns and restrictions – it was still a long, tiring and expensive journey back to Taiwan, so naturally you’ll find that they have built their own little Taiwanese community in South Africa, who love cooking and bringing their culture's flavours to life locally.

Wundercook seemed to come together so naturally. When the country went into lockdown, they couldn’t travel back to Taiwan and see their family, or walk the streets and eat the foods their parents grew up eating. So, they started making it themselves in South Africa. They reached out to other Taiwanese locals who made dishes from the small island their ancestors called home that couldn’t be replicated. They tested, tasted, tweaked and threw together ingredients from Taiwan to bring to life dishes that they missed and craved to transport them back to Taiwan in memory, if not physically. "The name Wundercook is a combination of wunderlust and cook. Starting Wundercook has given us the ability to express our passion for travel through food and share this with our family and friends in South Africa. Our ultimate goal is to allow all South Africans easy access to ingredients and recipes to recreate dishes from Taiwan and South East Asia in the comfort of their own homes. We want to introduce wholesome, nutritious home made meals with our fellow South Africans." wundercook

"Being able to run a local, sustainable small business with my sister has been such a great experience, and the icing on top has been the ability to support local Asian South African businesses and small immigrant businesses who make delicious food, all just trying to eak out a living and bring their childhood foods back to life in our beautiful South Africa." Wundercook started with supplying Johannesburg and Pretoria, and now are able to deliver a full range of products throughout Gauteng. Just recently, they've also launched nationwide delivery on all non-perishable pantry range. Their vision is to one day be able to grow Wundercook to be your Asian online grocer, where you will be able to shop recipes that they've curated and tried from East and South East Asia and experience all these flavours in the comfort of your own home.
