“Words That Heal” Marks Mental Health Awareness Month

Joburg Admin / October 22, 2025

Sandton City has unveiled the next chapter of its 'Words That Heal' campaign, in collaboration with the Riky Rick Foundation, to promote emotional well-being during Mental Health Awareness Month. What began as a nationwide call to share words of encouragement has now grown into a moving song of hope and an immersive in-centre experience that celebrates the power of creative expression in supporting youth mental wellness.

A Song That Speaks to Healing

Earlier this year, Sandton City shoppers were invited to share heartfelt voice notes of encouragement for people who are struggling. A selection of these messages, drawn from hundreds of submissions, was woven into a powerful song. Words That Heal, featuring Riky Rick, celebrates resilience and reminds listeners that no one is alone in their journey.

The track is available on streaming platforms and YouTube, and reflects the campaign’s core message: that words can connect, comfort, and inspire. Every person can play a part in turning awareness into action. The goal? Making mental health a national conversation that continues beyond October.

Experience The Movement At Sandton City

Until 9 November, you can step into the Words That Heal pop-up activation in Sandton City. The space showcases limited-edition merch inspired by “artivism,” the meeting point of creativity and activism that Riky Rick championed.

All proceeds go to the Riky Rick Foundation, supporting mental well-being and creating platforms for healing via creative expression. Visitors can also pledge their support online to contribute to mental health initiatives across the country.

Every day, South Africa loses an estimated 23 people to suicide, with hundreds more attempting to take their lives. Through this initiative, Sandton City aims to continue to provide hope, raise awareness, and champion meaningful conversations around mental health.

Keep raising your voice for those facing mental health challenges! The WhatsApp line 063 980 5816 is still open, and a kind message can help save a life. For more information, visit Sandton City's website or follow @sandtoncitymall on Instagram to join the Words That Heal movement.
