What's On At The Market Photo Workshop

Joburg Admin / August 20, 2019

If you weren't aware, World Photography Day has just come and gone. Celebrated globally on 19 August, the day is aimed at inspiring photographers across the world to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the world. While we may not have joined in on the celebrations, there is more than enough time until the next World Photography Day to enjoy the wonders of the medium by visiting Joburg's top photo gallery.

The Market Photo Workshop

The Market Photo Workshop has been at the forefront of educating young photographers and developing their skills since 1989. Founded by highly-acclaimed photographer David Goldblatt, The Market Photo Workshop has provided vital training for photographers from disadvantaged backgrounds who would otherwise not have had access to photographic equipment. Some of the school's most well-known alumni include Zanele Muholi, Jodi Bieber and Lebohang Kganye. The Photo Workshop Gallery, established in 2005, showcases both the student's work and exhibitions by professional photographers. An additional exhibition space, Gallery 1989, has also been opened since the Workshop made its move across Mary Fitzgerald Square to its current location. Entrance to these galleries is free to the public, so you really have no excuse not to pay them a visit. Market Photo Workshop

What's On

Since its inception, The Photo Workshop Gallery has hosted landmark group exhibitions like Short Change (2009), Working the City (2010),  Plastic Crowns (2017) and Faces and Phases 11 (2017). They have also hosted photographers including Juan Orrantia, Laurence Bonvin, Musa Nxumalo, Tracy Edser, Samantha Simons, Sabelo Mlangeni and Lebohang Kganye. This month sees Tshepiso Mabula ka Ndongeni's latest exhibition, titled Ukugrumba move into the gallery. Mabula is a Market Photo Workshop graduate and 2018 Tierney Fellow. Her photography exposes the humanity in oppositional, chaotic or even boring environments. Ukugrumba, which means to “dig up” in isiXhosa, is a body of work motivated by Mabula's family’s trauma as a result of activism in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. Presenting the stories of unsung heroes and those forgotten by the system, this exhibition is a must-see. [caption id="attachment_99250" align="aligncenter" width="660"] Ukugrumba[/caption]
