What To Expect At The Abantu Book Festival

Joburg Admin / September 30, 2019

Bookworms, This One's For You!

The Abantu Book Festival is a not-for-profit initiative that relies on donations and sponsorship for income. Each year they host a book festival, giving all bookworms the chance to meet authors, find books and be around like-minded people. https://www.instagram.com/p/BrSp2LsBrTK/

Where It all Began

Coming from humble beginnings in 2016, Abantu Book Festival has become an annual pilgrimage for black writers and readers, allowing them the space to express themselves freely through the art of African literature and the celebration of the rich and diverse African literary heritage. They have an extensive programme that is a feast for the whole family, which includes poetry and musical performances, writing and publishing workshops, panel discussions and in-conversations, dance and film-screening woven into the mix. This festival takes place over four days, allowing you to enjoy performances by the best poets, novelists, playwrights, biographers, children's writers, literary scholars, musicians, actors, activists, thinkers and readers from as far as can be imagined, transforming the historic location of Soweto into a literary village. https://www.instagram.com/p/Btp2Tjqhz4w/

Authors To Look Forward To On The Day

Last year, the likes of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Fred Khumalo, Gail Smith, Gcina Mhlophe, Haji Mohamed Dawjee, Lebo Mashile and many more graced the festival. To see who will be attending this year, click here! https://www.instagram.com/p/Btp2fjUhNdr/
