Western Cape: 23 new coronavirus cases – and another in Khayelitsha

Joburg Admin / April 2, 2020

A second coronavirus patient has been found in Khayelitsha, as the disease continues to charge through the Western Cape - here are the latest figures.

Data released by the Western Cape government on Thursday afternoon makes for grim reading in the province. Premier Alan Winde has confirmed another 23 cases have been registered – including a second patient in the sprawling township of Khayelitsha.

COVID-19 latest: Khayelitsha has another patient, WC cases continue to rise:

The settlement’s “patient zero” was detected earlier in the week, and these new developments are a serious cause for concern. Townships aren’t able to impose social distancing as well as more built-up areas, and those living in poverty are going to have a hard time stopping the rapid spread of coronavirus:

“Tomorrow marks a week since the national lockdown was put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus. This lockdown has been put in place to keep communities safe, to stop the spread and ensure that our health systems will be able to cope with the pressure that COVID-19 will place on it.”

“In the Western Cape, we have recorded 393 positively confirmed coronavirus cases now, with the majority of cases – 321 – in the Cape Town metro. While infections have grown more slowly here than elsewhere, we are seeing trends which are cause for concern. We are also seeing an increase in the number of local transmissions.”
