The Monument can be found inside the beautiful setting of a nature reserve. It was created not only as a place for South Africans to engage with the history of their country, but also that of the Afrikaans people and was voted one of the top ten culture hotspots in South Africa. On the 16th of December at 12 o'clock every year, tourists and locals alike flock to the Monument to witness the sun shining a single ray of light through the arch above the Hall of Heroes.
However, The Voortrekker Monument has many other fantastic attractions on offer such as: Blood River Heritage Site, Gift Shop, Ox Wagon Rides, Picnic Area, Horse Trails, Cycling Trails and Kerkenberg. Both Freedom Park and Fort Schanskop are a short distance away and engage the area in an interesting dialogue about South Africa's history.
