Unplug This December at Summer in the City

Joburg Admin / November 22, 2022

There's no summer like in the city! It's time to unplug from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and make a date on Saturday 03 December 2022 to spend a sun-kissed day in picturesque Waterfall City at Summer in the City Unplugged. Get your tickets now before it's too late! It's a summer must!

What Is It?

Summer in the City Unplugged is a laid-back day-night event that's perfect for the whole family. Spend the day relaxing on picnic blankets, eating scrumptious artisanal food, sipping on refreshing drinks, and grooving to the subtle beats of chilled music from intriguing new artists and DJs of the day.

The Music Lineup

The music kicks off with an opening acoustic set from Simone Govender, who plays some captivating interpretations of classic pop hits as well as a handful of original songs. We turn up the tempo next with a vinyl-only display of turntable power from Charles Leonard, a well-known urban DJ who will take you on a musical trip across genre, generation, and geography. Charles is especially fond of smooth South African jazz from the 70s and the 80s, as well as reggae, soul, chill, world, and trip hop.

Stepping up to the mic in the early afternoon is singer-songwriter and consummate guitarist, Jack Atlantic, who has seen his star soar in the last 18 months with the release of his debut album, Repaired. The SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominated musician showcases his deeply personal songs backked with his scintillating guitar work (likened to influences Dire straits and Chris Rea, which makes for an upbeat and fulfilling listening experience.

This will be followed by Karma Luna, one of a new breed of multi-talented artists emerging from the urban jungles of post Mandela South Africa, who combine live performance with DJ skills. Bold, edgy, elegant, and integrated, Karma's musical melting pot takes in such diverse influences as ambient pop and afro beat and recently played at the World Season Premiere of the Showmax Original Blood Psalms. She'll be spinning the decks with a mix of heady afrobeat and chilled tunes.

Remember the timeless classic soul sounds of the 60s and 70s? Iconic songs like I Feel Good, I'd Rather Go Blind, Mustang Sally and the legendary Pata Pata? Africa Soul deliver all these, as well as some contemporary versions of Uptown Funk (Bruno Mars), Happy (Pharrell Williams) and Whitney's I Will Always Love You – all with a distinctly unique South Africa flavour. This ten-member strong group, featuring no less than eight singers, have been wowing audiences throughout South Africa. Africa Soul is sophisticated, soulful, and unique. They bring something new, different, and exciting, for all age groups who want to experience beautiful music and exceptional voices - interpretations of an amazing musical era brought to life again in this new decade.

Delight Your Taste Buds

American writer Victoria Moran once opined “Enjoy your food, enjoy your life” and that's exactly what you can expect at Summer in the City-Unplugged. A wide range of delectable and mouthwatering food await every palate; from flame-grilled chisanyama, a taste of Madeira prawns and espetada, bratwurst & schnitzel, chourico, grilled chicken, shwarmas and of course vegan offerings, there is something for everyone. There is also Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream, Flat White Coffee, Lemonlicious and Tjips to tantalize your tastebuds. Add creativity to your picnic and create a charcuterie board for your summer’s day out and add wood-fired artisan bread from the Bread Gypsy.

In addition, take part in the Stella Artois Belgian Experience where you can look forward to Frites Artois, authentic Belgian style Fries with gourmet toppings – think zesty dipping sauces and delicious cheese toppings paired with an ice-cold Stella. Look out for the Whisky Brother & Co stand and enjoy a curated selection of limited and rare tipples including five of their recently released exclusive varieties along with other tasteful surprises.
