Top Spots For Outdoor Easter Celebrations With The Kids

Joburg Admin / February 28, 2024

Easter is fast approaching. Soon it will be time for hot cross buns, chocolate eggs and Easter egg hunts. We've scoured Joburg to find the best outdoor spots for your Easter day trips and celebrations. Here's what we found.

Rietvlei Zoo Farm

For an enjoyable day out with the family this Easter, head to Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Families can opt to braai under the shade of the lapas, burn off some excess energy exploring the vast grounds or view the farm's many animals. The park also offers a variety of recreational activities, including tractor rides, swings, steam train rides, a picnic area, a mini zipline, paddle boats and ziplining. Entrance is *R40 per person and you'll need to book a lapa and activities at the Farm Office.

Bokkie Park

There are few places as perfect for Easter celebrations as Bokkie Park. Located in Boksburg, this park offers lush gardens on the water banks, braai facilities, a play ground for the little ones and many farm animals. Spend a day at the park picnicking, braaing or walking around feeding carrots to the goats, sheep, rabbits, donkeys, cows, geese and pigs. There are ample hiding spots for an exhilarating Easter egg hunt and plenty of space for the kids to run around and burn off that sugar rush. Entry to the park is free but you'll need to book a lapa or braai facility beforehand.

Trees Eco Park

Trees Eco Park is a park and function venue located in Rynfield, Benoni. The facility offers a park that's safe for kids, a swimming pool, braai facilities, trees and even a few goats. Here, kids can climb trees, explore tunnels, enjoy a magical fairy garden, take on an obstacle course, practise their balancing skills, play in a sandpit and learn about trees, planets and birds, all in one beautiful setting. Bookings need to be made in advance and entry costs *R50 per person for the day.

Kloofendal Nature Reserve

If you're looking for a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then look no further than Kloofendal Nature Reserve. This fully enclosed, secure nature reserve offers a scenic outdoor location perfect to spend with family and friends. The reserve has a few hiking trails where a lucky few may get to see a few animals such as duiker, dassie, mongoose and hedgehog. After the long walk, enjoy a picnic on the lawn or book a lapa to get cover from the sun. Entry is free.

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

After a long weekend lazing about the house on their iPads, the kids need to get out and experience the sunshine and fresh air. There is no better way to do this than with an early morning hike at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. Kids can view zebra, red hartebeest and black wildebeest while they trudge along. Afterwards, have yourselves a thrilling bushveld Easter egg hunt and family picnic. This is a great way to get out and explore your city while having some holiday fun.
