The Best Markets In Joburg

Sofia Kouridis / March 6, 2026

contributions by Glen Poezyn

Markets are the perfect encapsulation of what a weekend should include: your best mates, delicious food, and handcrafted goodies made with love. Deciding which one to visit can be difficult, but that's where we come in. Here's a list of some of the best markets in Joburg where you're pretty much guaranteed to become a regular.

The Linden Market

The Linden Market is one of the most famous markets in Jozi for multiple reasons. There’s live music, food vendors with the most amazing treats you’ve ever tasted, and the widest variety of stalls to shop to your heart's content. More than that, though, it’s a love letter to the community, a market where locals can show their love and support for those around them.

Something to note: the Linden Market only comes around one weekend per season, so you’ll want to mark down the dates in your calendar. There is an entrance fee, typically around R60, and it’s pet-friendly, so the entire family can come and enjoy the day.

2026 dates: Autumn Edition: 28 & 29 March 2026 | Winter Edition: 30 & 31 May 2026 | Spring Edition: 26 & 27 September 2026 | Festive Edition: 28 & 29 November 2026

The Field Market

On the second Saturday of every month, Field & Study Park in Parkmore hosts the Field Market. It's incredibly popular, and you'll quickly understand why if you pop by. There's always a live musical lineup setting the tone while families claim their patch of grass and unpack their picnic blankets, and the spacious grounds mean nobody's ever struggling to find a spot to kick back.

Kids make a beeline for the massive playground area, their laughter mixing with the buzz of the market. Meanwhile, the smell of excellent food drifts from the stalls. You'll find fresh seasonal fruit, a huge array of global street food, cocktail caravans, baked goods, bubble tea...must we go on? Your shopping options are equally endless: handcrafted jewellery, thrifted and vintage clothing, accessories for your furry friends, books, art pieces, the works.

2026 dates: 14 March | 11 April | 9 May | 13 June | 11 July | 8 August (Long weekend) | 12 September | 10 October | 14 November (Christmas market) | 12 December (Christmas market)

Rusty Hook Markets

We’re kind of cheating with this one. Rusty Hook, in Honeydew, Roodepoort, often hosts a smorgasbord of markets on its grounds. From their monthly Hooked on Thrift Market, where you can find pre-loved pieces, to the Alternative Market run by Alternatribe, where you can expect to find crystals and punk rock galore, there is quite literally something for everyone.

To find out when their next market is, you’ll have to navigate over to their events calendar and see when the next one is that speaks to you. Of course, they have festive-themed markets as well, should you want to browse for something specific at these Joburg markets.

Jasmyn Crafters Flea Market

Jasmyn is the perfect excuse for a Haarties road trip. It'll be easy to spot, since the market is located by the huge windmill. The Dutch-inspired Joburg market is famous for its fresh farm produce, an expansive book shop, and, of course, the waffles! Open seven days a week, it’s the perfect market to hit when you and the crew are feeling spontaneous.

While it doesn’t conform to some standard market conventions, Jasmyn is still a staple of the Jozi market scene. While visiting, you’ll find home decor pieces, antique treasures, the makings to start your own vegetable garden, imported goodies, and the most tranquil scenery to backdrop your shopping adventure.

Prison Break Market

The Prison Break Market is named such due to its proximity to the Leeukop Prison, and it makes for a perfect breakaway from the ordinary market-going experience. This permanent market in Johannesburg is open all year round, and has compartmentalised its stalls for easy browsing.

In Shed 1, you’ll find the Harvest Pantry, full of local and fresh produce. Shed 2 is where all of the food stalls operate, cooking up culinary taste tours of the world. The Crafters Shed is number 3; this is where all of the incredible handmade pieces live. Jewellery, metalwork, glassblown ornaments, the works. There are 8 more Sheds, 11 in total, which house various other activities. There's a trampoline park, photo booths, CREATE (where you can paint ceramics), a pub, a dance academy, and more.

4 Ways Farmers Market

This Sunday market in Johannesburg combines a picturesque landscape and scenery with delicious food and drink, live entertainment, and abundant shopping opportunities, all wrapped up in a dog-friendly bow. One of the specialities of the 4 Ways Farmers Market is their boutique flower stalls, where you’ll be able to craft bespoke arrangements.

It's important to note that they're not in Fourways anymore. Now located in Modderfontein, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Kick back on the music lawn, go on a little shopping spree, order a drink at the bar, and relax in some of the designated areas that have been specifically designed with chilling in mind. The 4 Ways Farmers Market truly feels like the Swiss Army Knife of Joburg markets.

Bryanston Organic Market

If you’re after a market with a bit of history, the Bryanston Organic & Natural Market is a must. This long-running favourite has been part of Joburg life for over four decades and is often regarded as the city’s first outdoor market. Set beneath shady trees, it’s a calm, countryside-style escape in the middle of the suburbs where you can browse stalls packed with organic produce, wholesome treats, and beautifully handcrafted goods made by local artisans.

Rosebank Sunday Market

The Rosebank Sunday Market is one of Joburg's most popular markets. It really doesn't ever get old. Every Sunday, the level 4 mall parking fills with stalls selling everything from African crafts and handmade jewellery to vintage clothing, art, and quirky little treasures you didn’t know you needed. The food section is just as tempting, with plenty of international bites and sweet treats to keep you snacking while you browse. It’s lively, a little chaotic in the best way, and the kind of place where you can easily lose a few hours hunting for your next great find.

Markets are the best way to support local business, relax with your chommies, get the pets out of the house, and sample some delicious food all at once. We know there are many more dotting Joburg, and we’d love to hear about them from you!
