Momentarily transport yourself back in time to when really old-school mechanical slot machines dominated the gambling scene in casinos. Back in the 1920s, a unique feature was introduced into the old “one-armed bandits”, the Skill Stop button. The Mills Novelty Company is credited with being one of its early pioneers, and the action was an instant hit. It afforded players an element of control, as they could stop the spinning reels when they wanted.
But was the Skill Stop button just an illusion of control? It was, indeed. It was nothing more than a psychological element introduced to give players a sense of control through the skill of stopping the machine at just the right time, instead of letting it slow down and stop. But actually, the feature did nothing to change the ultimate randomness of results. It only stuck around because players like to have a feeling of agency over outcomes, even if it’s not really there.
Would Skill Stop Work Today?
The Skill Stop feature is typically not a feature found at online casinos. Online slots are controlled by a Random Number Generator, which determines the outcome of each spin. That RNG software is rigorously tested for game fairness. You can visit any of the Legalbet casinos, popular gambling platforms that have been reviewed and tested by the Legalbet website. All licensed operators offer verified games, where reel-spin outcomes happen entirely without player involvement. But does this lack of input actually put players at a disadvantage?
The RNG Importance
The answer is ‘no’. Software-controlled slots are very different from the old mechanical style ones. The Random Number Generator dictates everything, and it's a powerful algorithm that is specifically designed to produce completely random results. It eliminates the chance of a machine producing “hot” or “cold” streaks and any patterns that players could pick up on and manipulate. After pressing the Spin button on a slot, the RNG assigns each reel a randomised stop position number. It doesn’t matter if a player hits a Stop button; the result is the same as though the animation completed its full cycle. In the UK, one of the most advanced gambling markets in the world, the stop action feature was banned in 2021. It was considered something that could encourage higher gambling intensity. All modern stop buttons do is speed up play by halting the animation and showing the result. It doesn’t influence the result, however. That’s different from the mechanical Skill Stop button, because the reels stop at a random point when the player hits it. But the odds of producing a win still didn’t change; it was still all down to chance.
All An Illusion
A stop button was introduced as an illusion of control to make players believe that they had agency over the game. It moved them from being passive observers to being actively engaged. Being more of a participant in the action made it feel more challenging and more engaging.
That’s because the stop button imitates the need for skill. If a player stopped the reels at a winning point, it would be because of their “skill”, even though it was actually random chance. In reality, there's never been skill involved in spinning reels. On an online slot, the results of every spin are independent of each other due to the RNG.
Always Chance, Not Skill
The simple rule to remember is that slot machines don’t require skill when it comes to spinning reels. There’s no control over the outcomes by pressing a stop button. This means that players can’t “master” a slot machine. Simply put, when a stop button is pressed is irrelevant to the pre-determined math from an RNG that stops the machine’s action.
If there were a stop button that randomly produced the reel’s final position at the exact moment of it being pressed, it would mean that the slot would then be a game of skill and not chance. That would alter the fundamental nature of slots and change how they are categorised and regulated. Instead, they will always be games of chance that can’t be exploited.
