The RMB Turbine Art Fair Goes Virtual!

Joburg Admin / July 9, 2020

The RMB Turbine Art Fair is a unique South African art fair that brings together exhibitors from around the country to present, sell and celebrate art. This August commemorates the 8th annual RMB TAF. However, things are set to be somewhat different this year. Due to COVID-19 and lockdown restrictions, the physical fair cannot take place. As such the 2020 RMB Turbine Art Fair will be held totally online! A first of its kind in South Africa, this week long fair is breaking new ground and bringing together visionaries to build a new way forward. "Due to COVID-19 and lockdown safety precautions across the country, a physical fair is not possible. But a fair is most definitely required to offer support and a platform for galleries and artists alike," says Glynis Hyslop, Founder of RMB TAF. The arts industry has been one of the hardest hit as a result of lockdown restrictions. This is why the organisers and sponsors of the RMB TAF are determined to offer their support and solidarity with artists during these trying times. "As the proud headline sponsor of RMB TAF we are able to co-create a powerful platform to showcase artistic talent, which is needed now more than ever. The virtual fair will give galleries and artists access to a broader and more diverse audience, while appealing to both existing and new collectors," says Chief Marketing Officer at RMB, Alison Badenhorst. How Will It Work?

The virtual RMB Turbine Art Fair will take place from 27 August – 2 September 2020.  Each participating gallery will have a dedicated virtual viewing room where they will display their artworks. These display rooms will also feature interactive messaging, behind the scenes profiling of artists, and video content. Visitors to the virtual RMB TAF will be able to search for their favourite artists, exhibitors, or medium, allowing a user-friendly and convenient experience for all. The virtual fair will be free to enter for all visitors. The featured artist for this year's Fair is Jake Michael Singer. His work, along with a number of exciting new installations and sculptures by young, talented artists will be presented as part of the 'Looking Out' exhibition. You can also look forward to Strauss & Co's curated exhibition profiling the works of two South African female artists, Maggie Laubser and Gladys Mgudlandlu. This exhibition forms part of the 'Looking Back' showcase - a reflective look at artists who have and continue to be showcased and exhibited within the contemporary art landscape. In another first for the RMB TAF, ordinary South Africans have been asked to submit photographic work as part of the 'Stilled Life' project. A community photographic project, this exhibition seeks to document 'life in the time of COVID-19'. Entrants may submit their work under one of these three categories: #YourStory, #NewNormal, #HelpingHands. The top 100 photos will be selected by a panel of four judges and exhibited online at the RMB Turbine Art Fair. The selected photos will then go on to be auctioned by Strauss & Co in August, with all proceeds going to the BASA Artists Relief Fund.
