What Is It?

The Red Femicycle returns to the AGOG Gallery in Maboneng this August. Performed by Albert Ibokwe Khoza in collaboration with Oupa Sibeko (performance artist), Lerato matolodi (dancer) and Itai hakim (musician). Ibokwe is an internationally acclaimed performance artist. He continuously performs the persona of a loner individual, who is also a gay man and a Sangoma. Through his sexuality and traditional practice, he expresses his thoughts. Moving between different artistic mediums to outline social ills, he critically questions his surroundings, his leaders and life itself. "The Red Femicycle happens every month every day every hour every minute sometimes without the cramps. This is a offering and tribute to the spirit of Matriarchs that have shaped and influenced me my mother, my grandmothers to my initiators and the many strong woman who have been stripped of their dignity and worth. I'm no activist, I am no feminist, but I am a humanist. I have no answers, nor do I have major life changing solution, but I understand the impact this work will have on me and other humans. I will stand up and speak on woman's issues as man categorised by biology, but I will also speak and stand for woman as a non-gender appropriate human being," Ibokwe said of the piece.
