The Market Laboratory presents Modjadji In Absentia

Joburg Admin / July 15, 2019

What Is It?

We are a nation under strain of drought, poverty, unemployment, abuse and violence. Carla Fonseca's latest bilingual contemporary theatre production Modjadji in Absentia, addresses these socio-political issues through a spectacular staging of rituals and sound. Modjadji is the living reincarnation of the rain goddess. She has survived countless transformations over millennia. The enigma of the rain queen Modjadji, has thus formed a fundamental part of South African culture, mythology and history. Modjadji in Absentia inspired by this myth, delivers a poetic and poignant telling of a story of a few characters. Follow their daily transformations, their struggles and their diverse identities as they live in a country where rape, poverty, violence and fear have all become a massive pandemic. The play traces our hidden primal existence and examines the complexities of a generation in the face of crisis/drought and in desperate need of transformation/water. Modjadji in Absentia will be staged for only five performances at the Market Lab. So, get your tickets ASAP to avoid missing out!
